About the team

University of Otago’s Student Services and Proctor’s Office is seeking a Campus Watch team member to join a diverse group of staff who provide help and guidance whenever it is needed.

Role overview

This position is primarily pastoral in nature. The aim is to help create and sustain a safe campus environment where students can thrive and reach their full potential. The team works across the University campus and in the North Dunedin community, serving as visible, approachable points of contact for information and assistance.

Campus Watch operates on a permanent 24-hour roster across five teams. The shift pattern includes two early shifts, two evening shifts, two night shifts, followed by four days off, and then repeats.

You will be expected to maintain a strong visible presence around the University to deter crime and disorder, and to respond quickly when assistance is needed for matters involving personal safety or property.

Key duties

  • Support student wellbeing by taking a pastoral, people-focused approach.
  • Help maintain a secure and orderly campus environment.
  • Provide assistance and advice to students, staff, and members of the wider community.
  • Move around campus and North Dunedin on foot as a highly visible presence.
  • Respond promptly to situations where safety or property may be at risk.
  • Work within a roster that includes out-of-hours and shift-based duties.

Skills and experience required

Applicants should be physically fit and healthy, and be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Comfort and ability in working with young people.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Sound judgement, patience, tact, and common sense.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with people from varied backgrounds.
  • A good sense of humour.
  • Working knowledge of relevant New Zealand law.
  • A current driver’s licence.
  • A current First Aid Certificate, or a willingness to obtain one.
  • Basic computer literacy.

Terms and conditions

  • This is a permanent full-time role of 37.5 hours per week.
  • The position is academic-year only, running from February to November each year.
  • Academic-year-only appointments may move to full-year roles when vacancies become available.
  • The job involves routine shift work outside standard business hours.
  • The salary range is $63,508 to $68,185, with a top of range salary of $73,640 pro rata per annum.
  • The role includes salary plus 6.75% superannuation.
  • Leave benefits include 5 weeks of annual leave, long service leave, and additional paid parental leave entitlements.
  • Applicants must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand.
  • Final-stage candidates will need to complete a police clearance check.
  • Questions about the position can be directed to Dave Scott, Proctor.
  • Applications must include a CV and cover letter and quote reference number 2601054.
  • The closing date is Monday, 13 July 2026.
  • Applications may be reviewed as they are received, and the vacancy may close early at the University’s discretion.
