About the Role
We are looking for a technically proficient Associate or Senior Associate Transport Planner to influence the future of transport planning and appraisal initiatives across Ireland and the UK. This role involves tackling complex multi-modal transport challenges, leading technical workstreams, engaging closely with clients, and integrating innovative approaches such as digital tools and AI into project execution. You'll work within a specialist team handling projects from short advisory inputs to multi-billion-euro infrastructure developments, mentoring junior planners, improving methodologies, and establishing yourself as an expert in transport appraisal and modelling.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead technically complex projects, ensuring quality and timely delivery.
- Act as primary client liaison to understand requirements and provide solutions that meet or exceed expectations.
- Support multidisciplinary project teams, track progress against budgets and schedules, and maintain high standards.
- Mentor and develop junior team members through coaching, technical support, and quality reviews.
- Drive business development, innovation, and methodological enhancements, including integrating digital and AI technologies.
- Progress toward recognized subject-matter expertise within the organisation and broader industry.
Qualifications and Experience
- Level 8 degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering, Planning, Physics, Economics, Mathematics, Geography, or a related discipline.
- Demonstrable experience delivering major transport planning projects.
- Strong technical, analytical, and report writing skills.
- Desirable: Level 9 postgraduate Master’s degree in Transport Planning, Operational Research, Statistics, or similar.
- Chartered membership of a relevant professional institution is advantageous.
- Project management qualification such as APMP is a plus.
- Experience working on large-scale public-sector infrastructure projects.
Technical Competences
- In-depth knowledge of UK and Irish transport planning principles, including business case development and appraisal frameworks (TAG, PAG, Green Book, TAF).
- Familiarity with transport appraisal tools such as TUBA and COBALT.
- Experience in rail scheme development and multi-modal transport modelling using software like CUBE, SATURN, VISUM, VISSIM, Junctions, or LinSig.
- Ability to develop tailored analytical tools and solutions, as well as conducting quality assurance checks.
Project and Client Management
- Proven capability to lead multi-disciplinary transport planning projects, managing multiple workstreams and competing priorities.
- Strong commercial and financial understanding to deliver cost-effective project results.
- Effective communication skills to build client relationships, present expert advice, and deliver client-ready reports.
- Ability to contribute meaningfully to collaborative decision-making and stakeholder engagement.
Working Environment
This position is based in any of our Ireland offices – Galway, Dublin, Cork, or Kilkenny – with travel typically required for client meetings, particularly in Dublin, and collaboration with Cork colleagues.
