About the Role and Institution

The Fitzwilliam Museum, the primary museum of the University of Cambridge and a leading cultural venue in the region, is renowned globally for its exceptional research, top-tier exhibitions, award-winning public programs, and diverse collections representing many cultures and historical periods. The Hamilton Kerr Institute (HKI) operates as a premier center specializing in conservation and heritage science education and research.

The Museum manages, curates, and displays extensive art collections affiliated with the University. Within its Collections & Research Division, the Registrar's Office is responsible for managing the loan processes involving artworks both incoming and outgoing—including collections from the Museum, private lenders, and long-term exhibition loans. The office also handles logistical aspects such as transportation, insurance coverage, and government indemnity.

Role Responsibilities

The Assistant Registrar will fulfill a vital function within the loans management team and broader Museum operations. This role requires managing multiple ongoing loan cases, liaising with Collections Management, Exhibitions, Curatorial, and Conservation teams alongside external borrowers and transport providers. The position also supports the audit and administration of the College loan program. Effective collaboration with Museum staff, researchers, service suppliers, and contractors is essential.

Candidate Profile and Skills

Applicants should possess strong familiarity with the legal and regulatory frameworks governing art loans, including knowledge of collections management, fine art logistics, insurance policies, and indemnity agreements. The candidate must demonstrate excellent organizational skills and the capacity to coordinate various loan projects simultaneously, managing competing deadlines efficiently.

Employment Details and Benefits

This fixed-term position is funded initially for one year. The Fitzwilliam Museum offers a supportive working environment, with an attractive pension plan, generous holiday entitlements, and access to various employee benefits including shopping discounts. Hybrid working arrangements are in place, allowing individuals to balance onsite collaboration with remote work, subject to discussion with supervisors.

Additional Information

  • The selected candidate must undergo a basic criminal records check and security clearance as a condition of employment.
  • Applicants need to provide confirmation of their eligibility to live and work in the United Kingdom.
  • The application deadline is midnight on Sunday 26th July 2026, with interviews scheduled for Wednesday 5th August 2026.
