About the Role

Scarborough Chinese Baptist Church (SCBC), a vibrant trilingual community church in Scarborough, Ontario, seeks an experienced Accounting Clerk to oversee daily accounting tasks, financial operations, monthly reporting, budgeting, and annual audits to ensure compliance internally and externally. This role also involves administrative assistance for general office responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct monthly bank and credit account reconciliations, including online donations.
  • Prepare regular financial statements (monthly, quarterly, annual) and ensure accurate filings for WSIB, EHT, and related obligations.
  • Utilize QuickBooks proficiently to record financial transactions and review monthly reconciliations to resolve outstanding cheque issues.
  • Analyze budget versus actual financial reports to identify and explain variances.
  • Prepare year-end adjustments and audit schedules, collaborating with external auditors.
  • File GST/HST rebate claims and complete annual non-profit organization returns for the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
  • Serve as the primary interface with CRA on matters related to rebates and filings.
  • Supervise capital asset inventory recording and participate in budget creation and financial audits.
  • Review and update financial policies and procedures to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory standards.
  • Support office and ministry needs with accounting expertise and general administrative tasks including information coordination, editing, translation, design, communication, and printing.
  • Advise and assist the Church Board with governance, risk assessment, compliance audits, policy development, and training.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a similar accounting role with a full suite of accounting responsibilities.
  • Familiarity with financial best practices and applicable regulations for non-profit organizations, including CRA guidelines.
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks, Powerpay by Dayforce payroll software, and advanced Excel skills.
  • Strong analytical, numerical, organizational, and time management abilities.
  • High ethical standards and ability to handle confidential information sensitively.
  • Post-secondary education: Bachelor's degree or diploma/certificate in accounting or finance.
  • Excellent communication skills in both written and spoken English and Chinese languages.
  • Interpersonal skills for effectively handling member inquiries and liaising with event organizers professionally.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and ability to work well individually and within a team.
  • A spiritually mature Christian committed to the church's mission and values.
