Purpose of the Role
The Supervisor - Screener is tasked with overseeing the secure and effective screening of checked baggage to ensure adherence to regulations and identify potential prohibited or dangerous items. This role involves managing screening equipment, documenting outcomes, coordinating with security teams, and dealing with passengers to uphold the highest security standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Attend and successfully complete all mandatory regulatory training sessions.
- Operate X-Baggage Inspection System (X-BIS) equipment to detect hazardous materials, prohibited items, weapons, or ammunition as guided by Avsec protocols.
- Conduct physical checks and Explosives Trace Detection (ETD) on flagged baggage when necessary.
- Maintain high Threat Image Projection (TIP) accuracy scores to demonstrate excellent image interpretation skills.
- Strictly comply with BCAS and DGCA aviation security directives during all baggage screening operations.
- Document all screening activities and findings to satisfy audit and inspection standards.
- Perform pre-operational checks and regular maintenance on X-BIS, ETD, CT-EDS, and other related equipment to ensure readiness.
- Report any equipment issues promptly and contribute to maintaining operation logs.
- Collaborate effectively with CISF, airline personnel, and other stakeholders during physical inspections and resolving suspicious findings.
- Communicate current operations and challenges to supervisors timely.
- Manage screening processes efficiently to prevent delays while balancing thoroughness with speed.
- Exhibit professional conduct and maintain discipline to foster a constructive work atmosphere.
- Adhere to company policies regarding workplace behavior and standards.
Key Internal and External Stakeholders
Collaboration extends to internal teams such as CSO, audit, ILHBS leads, terminal operations, IT, HR, compliance units, and other airport departments. Externally, coordination is maintained with TSA, aircraft operators, airport authorities, law enforcement, local police, regulatory bodies like BCAS and DGCA, service providers, and passenger groups.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum education: High school diploma or equivalent; bachelor's degree is advantageous.
- Required certifications include TSA certification; preferred certifications are BCAS basic AVSEC course, inline or standalone screener certification by BCAS, and DGCA’s DGR CAT 12 certification.
- Holding NCC "B" or "C" certificate is preferred.
- Suitable candidates are freshers or individuals with up to 2 years' experience in security screening, ideally at airports.
- Experience in operating screening equipment and understanding security protocols is essential.
Physical Requirements
- Visual acuity must be 20/60 or better in both eyes without corrective lenses, or 20/20 in one eye and 20/30 in the other with glasses or contacts; adequate color vision is necessary.
- Hearing ability must be within 30 dB hearing loss for frequencies below 2000 Hz.
- Clear speech capability for effective oral communication.
- Physical fitness to communicate and function without impediments during crisis situations.
- Ability to detect odors related to security purposes.
