Job description

About Halter

Halter is dedicated to supporting farmers and graziers by empowering them to manage their operations more productively and sustainably. Our innovative technology allows peaceful cattle movement without traditional constraints such as quad bikes, dogs, or fences, fundamentally transforming the grazing industry. Our team thrives on solving complex problems within a high-performance culture and aims to make meaningful contributions that drive real-world change.

Supported by leading investors including Founders Fund, Bessemer Venture Partners, BOND, DCVC, Blackbird, Promus Ventures, Rocket Lab’s Peter Beck, and Icehouse ventures, Halter is revolutionizing pasture management. We prioritize creating smarter decision-making tools that increase grass yield, promote healthier soil, improve animal welfare, and grant more free time to farmers.

Role Overview

We seek experienced Senior Engineers who combine a strong product mindset with technical expertise. Whether your strengths lie in frontend, backend, full stack, or platform engineering, you will tackle unprecedented challenges and deliver robust, thoughtful software solutions. Proficiency in leveraging AI tools to enhance productivity is essential.

Key Challenges

  • Transforming extensive sensor data from thousands of collars into actionable insights for farmers.
  • Accurate real-time modeling of the physical environment including animals, pasture, and terrain.
  • Developing reliable mobile and web interfaces that perform under challenging outdoor conditions.
  • Creating scalable platforms and pipelines that seamlessly support rapid growth.
  • Engineering resilient software capable of handling hardware constraints and unreliable rural connectivity.

Responsibilities

  • End-to-end design, development, and deployment of features affecting both user-facing surfaces and back-end infrastructure.
  • Making informed architectural decisions and implementing them through quality code.
  • Collaborating closely with engineering, design, and product teams to deliver impactful features swiftly.
  • Mentoring peers via code reviews, design discussions, and knowledge sharing.
  • Maintaining system reliability and performance, including participation in on-call rotations.
  • Gaining hands-on experience on farms to deepen domain understanding.

Candidate Profile

  • Proven track record designing and launching complex production systems.
  • Product-oriented engineering approach that emphasizes user experience alongside code quality.
  • Experienced in utilizing AI tools to increase team effectiveness.
  • Skilled at coaching and guiding other engineers.
  • Thrives in fast-paced, ambiguous settings with a focus on adaptability over perfection.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms, preferably AWS.
  • A software engineering degree is advantageous but not required.
  • Depending on specialization, expertise may include:
    • Frontend/mobile: proficiency in modern frameworks (React, React Native), strong UX sensibility, performance optimization for real devices.
    • Backend: scalable REST API design, event-driven system development, familiarity with both relational and NoSQL databases; knowledge of Node.js, Kotlin, Go, or hardware/IoT integration is a plus.
    • Full stack: comprehensive knowledge spanning frontend, mobile, and backend service development.
    • Platform: designing efficient engineering tools, AI integration, expertise with AWS and Terraform at scale, and refined CI/CD and observability practices.

Benefits

  • Access to a variety of snacks and beverages to support your daily workflow.
  • Partnership with Southern Cross Health Insurance for wellness support.
  • Generous parental leave policies including six months fully paid for primary caregivers and four weeks for secondary caregivers.
  • An annual $1,000 personal development allowance for learning and growth opportunities.
  • Unlimited paid leave and wellness days to promote work-life balance.
  • Competitive salary package complemented by benefits and employee stock ownership options.

Work Culture

Halter prioritizes an office-first approach while maintaining flexibility to foster genuine connections crucial for collaboration, growth, and impactful work. The company values a high-trust environment with strong relationships formed through in-person interaction, which many team members find enriching and motivating compared to fully remote or hybrid settings.

Diversity and Inclusion

We are committed to building an inclusive workplace where every individual can bring their authentic selves and thrive. We encourage candidates from diverse backgrounds to apply even if they do not meet every listed requirement.
