About the Role
The Air Traffic Management Research Institute (ATMRI) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), supported by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), aims to advance research and innovation in air traffic management (ATM) by developing data-driven and practical solutions for complex aviation systems in collaboration with industry and global partners.
We are seeking a Research Fellow focused on the study of human factors and cognitive systems within ATM. This role covers research on operator cognitive load, situational awareness, and decision-support tools tailored for air traffic controllers. The fellow will design and assess human-in-the-loop tools employing eye-tracking, physiological sensing, and uncertainty visualization techniques to contribute to research excellence at NTU.
Primary Responsibilities
- Undertake research centered on human factors and cognitive system methodologies applicable to air traffic management.
- Design, create, and validate decision-support interfaces and tools for operators using both real operational and simulated datasets.
- Support investigations related to controller cognitive workload, situational awareness, and system resilience relevant to current and envisioned ATM concepts.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to build prototypes and frameworks for human-in-the-loop evaluations.
- Conduct user studies analysing data from eye-tracking and physiological sensing to evaluate usability and performance under realistic operational conditions.
- Draft technical documents, academic papers, and project deliverables; actively participate in meetings and reviews.
- Publish research outcomes in reputed journals and conferences within domains such as human-computer interaction, human factors, and air traffic management.
- Contribute to the preparation of research proposals and technical documentation for project activities.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- PhD in Human-Computer Interaction, Cognitive Science, Human Factors, Air Traffic Management, Transport, or a closely related discipline.
- Minimum one year of pertinent research experience in human factors or cognitive systems, preferably within transport, aviation, or other safety-critical settings.
- Expertise in cognitive load assessment, decision-support system design, or human-in-the-loop methodologies for complex operational environments like ATM or control rooms.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for preparing technical reports and scholarly publications.
- Technical proficiency in programming languages such as Python for research and data analytics, and familiarity with eye-tracking and physiological sensing techniques.
- Solid numerical and analytical skills coupled with problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively under deadlines, with effective organizational and time management skills.
