About the Role
The European Commission’s Directorate General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO) supports relief missions for victims of disasters and conflicts outside the EU. Working with around 200 partners including the UN, Red Cross, and NGOs, DG ECHO delivers aid impartially.
DG ECHO is seeking one National Staff member to join its Nairobi Regional Office (Kenya) as a Regional Safety Associate. This role supports security-related activities for DG ECHO personnel, offices, and operations across East, Central, and Southern Africa regions.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in assessing local security conditions and verifying intelligence to inform Regional Security Coordinators (RSCs).
- Provide security updates and advice to the Head of Regional Office and Heads of Offices as needed.
- Coordinate with security focal points among DG ECHO partners and other relevant entities.
- Maintain a database of security incidents and produce analytical security charts.
- Support the preparation and review of contingency and security plans and procedures.
- Assist in executing security protocols and procedures as required.
- Participate in creating country-specific Security Risk Assessments, Premises Security Surveys, Standard Operating Procedures, and contingency plans.
- Manage the warden system and keep current records for offices and residences in the region.
- Support ongoing security training sessions for DG ECHO staff alongside the RSCs.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Relevant university degree and/or equivalent professional experience in security-related fields.
- At least five years of experience in safety and security roles at national or international levels.
- Strong operational security background within humanitarian organizations (UN agencies, Red Cross, NGOs) highly preferred.
- Experience in diplomatic security, protection, or security analysis is advantageous.
- Proficiency in standard office software (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Understanding of cartography principles including GPS and online maps.
- Familiarity with humanitarian communication systems like HF/VHF radio and satellite links.
- Basic knowledge of first aid techniques, including advanced first aid.
- Valid driver’s license is required.
Language Skills
- Fluency in written and spoken English is mandatory.
- French language knowledge is a considerable advantage.
- Swahili language skills are a plus.

Additional Information
This national staff position is based in Nairobi and open to Kenyan nationals and residents with valid permanent residence permits. Employment begins with a one-year contract subject to renewal and includes a three-month probationary period. The salary range starts at KES 350795 per month, adjusted according to years of relevant professional experience, with benefits including a disability/retirement allowance, 13th month pay, and medical coverage.
