Public Realm Operative L2 Street Cleansing

Role overview

Nottingham City Council is hiring Public Realm Operatives to support frontline waste, cleansing, and environmental services across the city. This permanent role is based at Eastcroft Depot, London Road, Nottingham, NG2 3AH, and involves practical outdoor work that helps keep public spaces clean, safe, and well maintained.

The position is offered as a 37-hour-per-week post with an offsite working pattern. The starting salary is £25,583 at Level 1, increasing to £26,403, with part-time pay adjusted pro rata where applicable.

What the job involves

You will carry out a variety of duties across street cleansing, fly-tip clearance, neighbourhood upkeep, bulky waste support, and city centre operations. The work may require you to move between services and sites depending on operational demand, and it must be carried out in all weather conditions while maintaining a high standard of customer service.

Shift arrangements

• Extended service hours are included in the role.
• Monday to Friday shift: 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
• Wednesday to Sunday rota: Wednesday to Friday from 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and Saturday to Sunday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
• City Centre posts: 2 vacancies on a 4-on/4-off pattern, working from 2:00 pm to 1:00 am.

What the council is looking for

The ideal applicant will have background experience in waste, cleansing, environmental, or other manual outdoor work. You should understand health and safety, safe working methods, and vehicle operations, and be able to work well with others while also using your own initiative. Strong communication and a customer-focused approach are important, along with flexibility for evenings, weekends, and other operational requirements.
