The role

Reporting to the Head of People & Culture, you will take ownership of the full payroll function for around 800 to 900 weekly-paid employees and manage one direct report. The position combines day-to-day payroll leadership with projects focused on improvement, efficiency and change. You will be responsible for payroll accuracy, governance and compliance, while also working closely with HR and supporting the business hands-on when needed.

Key responsibilities

• Manage the complete payroll process for approximately 800 to 900 weekly employees, while guiding and supporting one team member
• Make sure payroll is processed accurately and on time, and remains aligned with Australian payroll law, Awards, Enterprise Agreements and internal policies
• Check and audit payroll activity, and provide specialist advice on complex payroll issues, governance and compliance
• Work in partnership with HR and other key stakeholders to manage employee changes and maintain payroll integrity
• Drive payroll projects and continuous improvement work by identifying ways to simplify processes and improve efficiency
• Review payroll data, reporting and controls to support sound decisions and stronger operations
• Offer practical leadership and technical payroll support to the team while staying involved in hands-on tasks where needed

Skills and experience

• Proven background in a Payroll Manager role or a senior payroll position
• Strong end-to-end payroll experience in a high-volume, complex environment
• Solid knowledge of Australian payroll legislation, Awards and Enterprise Agreements
• Experience leading, coaching or mentoring payroll staff
• Exposure to iChris will be looked upon favourably
• Strong analytical thinking with the ability to spot risks, solve issues and improve processes
• A proactive, solutions-oriented mindset with a genuine focus on continuous improvement
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, especially across HR and broader business teams
