About the Role
Become a vital part of Mackay's infrastructure development as a Plant Operator with the Mackay Regional Council's Civil Operations team. If you have a passion for handling heavy machinery, prefer working in an outdoor setting, and desire to contribute meaningfully to community projects, this opportunity awaits you.
Key Responsibilities
- Skillfully operate ride-on equipment and light to medium mechanical plant machinery.
- Drive rigid motor vehicles with Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) of 22.5 tonnes or more, including vehicle and trailer combinations up to Gross Combination Mass (GCM) of 42.5 tonnes.
- Engage in physical labor tasks related to the construction and upkeep of roads and drainage systems.
- Carry out daily inspections, maintenance, and pre-start checks on assigned machinery.
- Work collaboratively with mechanical service teams to address repairs and maintenance needs.
- Implement effective traffic management and ensure safety standards on worksites.
- Provide excellent service to both internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Complete all documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
- Perform essential basic numerical calculations pertinent to job functions.
- Share expertise and assist colleagues through on-the-job training.
- Adhere strictly to environmental regulations and workplace health and safety (WH&S) protocols.
- Participate actively in continuous training and skill development initiatives.
Qualifications and Experience
- Possession of a General Construction Safety “White” Card.
- Valid Queensland Manual Car ‘C’ Class Open Driver’s Licence or equivalent from other states.
- Queensland Heavy Rigid Truck ‘HR’ Class Licence or interstate equivalent.
- Certificate of Competency for operating road construction plant and equipment such as skid steer loaders, rollers, loaders, or backhoes.
- Traffic Management Implementation (TMI) certification or willingness to obtain it within 12 months of employment.
- Certificate III in Civil Construction is advantageous but not mandatory.
- Demonstrated experience driving trucks in diverse road conditions and operating road construction machinery.
- Background in construction and maintenance of road and drainage infrastructure.
- Experience in concrete work is considered a plus.

- Basic proficiency in reading, writing, and numerical skills.
- Strong competence in operating heavy plant machinery and driving trucks.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.

- Understanding of preventative maintenance for machinery.
- Familiarity with WH&S regulations within the civil construction industry.
- Knowledge of construction techniques for roads and drainage.
- Experience with mechanical plant operation and upkeep.
