Role overview
The Laboratory Technician will be responsible for preparing and testing customer samples while maintaining the company’s standards for efficiency, quality, and accuracy. A structured training plan will begin when employment starts, covering the basic testing methods relevant to the work area.
Key duties
- Build competence in sample preparation for analytical testing.
- Develop a solid understanding of laboratory working practices that support analysis.
- Learn and apply the relevant test methods and procedures, including SOPs.
- Work in line with ISO 17025 requirements and the organisation’s internal quality procedures at all times.
- Complete records and documentation promptly, accurately, and clearly.
- Verify weights and temperatures according to company processes.
- Keep personal training records current and take the initiative to begin additional training where appropriate.
- Follow company expectations for safety, cleanliness, and quality, and report any issues to a Senior Technician or Team Leader.
- Maintain a clean and orderly laboratory environment.
- Ensure the lab has the required consumables, reagents, and related supplies.
- Clean laboratory equipment as needed, including fridges, incubators, and water baths.
- Make sure reagent bottles and beakers are properly filled, replaced regularly, and labelled correctly.
- Check that no expired reagents remain in the laboratory.
- File all documentation connected to customer samples and results.
- Provide support coverage for other staff members when required and take part in the weekend rota.
- Remain flexible to work in any area of the business as needed.
Requirements
- A degree in Environmental Chemistry, Microbiology, Analytical Chemistry, or another closely related discipline.
- Evidence of continuous professional development.
- Previous experience in an accredited contract testing laboratory or a similar laboratory setting is preferred, although full training will be provided.
- Good knowledge of relevant quality systems and accreditation standards.
- Strong keyboard skills and experience using LIMS and Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
- Good written and spoken English, along with solid numeracy skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a busy multidisciplinary technical environment and independently when needed.
- Comfortable working under pressure with strong attention to detail.
- Able to multitask, prioritise, organise, and coordinate personal workload.
- Capable of understanding customer needs and helping shape suitable solutions.
- Influential enough to help others work toward shared customer-focused goals.
- Confident communicator with strong interpersonal skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication ability.
