Juvenile Probation Officer

Role Summary

The Juvenile Probation Officer undertakes professional duties for managing juvenile probation caseloads. This involves overseeing court-mandated supervision levels ranging from minimal to intensive for youth who have been convicted of crimes. Additional responsibilities include programming, testing, certifying, and maintaining two-way radios for Detention and Probation departments, as well as inventory tracking.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage juvenile probation cases by conducting social histories concerning clients' backgrounds including criminal records, family dynamics, education, peer influences, substance use, and mental health conditions.
• Provide sentencing recommendations to the Court aligned with the State's Balanced Approach focusing on community safety, accountability, and youth development.
• Conduct investigations when Prosecutors seek to waive juvenile jurisdiction for adult prosecution.
• Furnish law enforcement affidavits and warrants for probation violations.
• Appear and testify as an expert witness in court-related hearings, such as sentencing, probation revocations, and conditional releases.
• Meet with clients and their guardians to explain probation requirements, supervise risk levels, and assist in necessary documentation including funding applications.
• Administer supervised drug testing and maintain safety protocols handling biological samples.
• Conduct fieldwork including visits to homes, schools, and workplaces to verify compliance with probation terms and coordinate with law enforcement on searches within client-controlled areas.
• Engage regularly with supervisors and maintain communication with courts, law enforcement, families, and other agencies.

Work Environment & Conditions

The position primarily involves indoor work but may include travel within the county and exposure to challenging environments and potentially hazardous situations when interacting with juveniles.

Additional Specifications

Work demands independent judgment and application of established procedures in moderately complex scenarios. The incumbent is subject to hourly pay and qualifies for benefits. No direct supervision responsibilities. Approval from the Board of County Commissioners attained in July 2022.
