Role Overview

As a Frontend Engineer in the Inbox team, you will be central to developing critical Proton services including Mail and Calendar. The role requires a strong customer focus, passion for technology and usability, and the ability to transform complex technical designs into intuitive user interfaces. Collaboration with product managers, designers, API teams, and colleagues is essential, as is making data-driven development decisions.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee entire lifecycle of mobile application development projects, from scoping to delivery, managing deadlines and prioritizing key elements.
• Drive innovation by investigating emerging technologies, development methods, and creative solutions for web challenges.
• Design scalable user experiences accounting for data caching, network optimization, and server load considerations.
• Implement monitoring solutions to track and alert on the health of Inbox web clients.
• Maintain a customer-first approach by gathering feedback and iterating to refine user experience.
• Develop and support high-quality user features, ensuring excellent onboarding and user retention.
• Collaborate closely with backend developers, product leads, designers, QA, and engineers to deliver projects from concept to release.
• Conduct thorough code reviews, provide feedback to uphold code quality, maintainability, and optimize performance.
• Create and apply comprehensive testing strategies across layers to guarantee software reliability and ease future development.

Technologies and Tools

The stack includes JavaScript, TypeScript, React, Symfony, and Rust. All client codebases are open source. Developing encrypted communications presents unique frontend challenges, such as implementing search on fully encrypted email content.

Candidate Requirements

• Proven professional software development experience with JavaScript or TypeScript.
• Proficiency in React or at least two similar frameworks to build reusable, high-performance components.
• Experience contributing to API codebases; PHP experience is a plus.
• Skilled in writing scalable tests and familiar with code quality best practices including CI/CD.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with monitoring and observability tools.
• Working within distributed teams.
• Understanding of common client-side security risks (e.g., OWASP Top 10) and mitigation strategies.
• Knowledge of UX best practices, accessibility standards, internationalization, and localization.

Compensation

• Salary range in Paris: 43000 to 69000 EUR gross annually.
• In other locations, compensation is discussed during interview stages and based on candidate qualifications.
