Role summary
The Fabricator II will be responsible for laying out and assembling flat and formed plate parts based on engineering drawings, with only limited help from another fabricator. The job also involves tack welding parts together, preparing fabrication components, laying out and grinding materials to shape them correctly, and assisting with the forming of raw plate as needed.
Classification expectations
This position is expected to meet the standards of the previous classification and demonstrate strong blueprint reading skills, with the exception of geometric tolerancing.
The role also includes the ability to work on complex turbine and pump assemblies with direction and support from a Fabricator 3. This includes runners, distributor assemblies, shaft-to-runner installations, Kaplan turbine assemblies, and pump assemblies.
The fabricator should be capable of setting up efficient work cells, carrying out hot and cold forming processes such as buckets, contributing ideas for continuous improvement, vent checking runners and pumps with help, and operating main cranes to lift components weighing up to 25 tons.
Key duties
- Interpret drawings, instructions, and work orders accurately.
- Measure and record dimensions with micrometers, calipers, and similar tools.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Inform the supervisor promptly about issues related to the job, schedule, safety, or the workpiece.
- Apply paint to equipment and finished job parts.
- Fit assembled machined parts together to verify alignment and prepare them for additional machining.
Skills and abilities
The ideal candidate should be detail-focused, comfortable solving problems, able to work independently or as part of a team, and able to communicate clearly. Strong blueprint reading ability and consistent attention to safety are essential.
The role also requires hands-on fabrication capability, including roll setups, mounting weldments on welding positioners, hot and cold forming, vent checking support, and crane operation.
Qualifications
A high school diploma or GED is required. College or technical school training is preferred. The role calls for at least 3 years of experience, or an equivalent mix of education and experience.
Large structural fabrication experience is required, and hydro fabrication experience is considered an advantage.
