Role Overview
The Estimator will develop precise and competitive cost evaluations for construction projects, assisting Commercial and Estimating teams during the pre-contract stage. Responsibilities include measuring and pricing project components, analysing construction drawings and specifications, collaborating with supply chain partners, and managing estimating records and historical data to enable sound commercial decisions.
Primary Responsibilities
- Create detailed cost estimates, bills of quantities, and measurement take-offs based on drawings, specifications, and tender documents in line with tender criteria.
- Examine tender documents and site data to identify risks, exclusions, provisional sums, and opportunities, reflecting these factors appropriately in estimates and assumptions.
- Request, review, and compare quotations from subcontractors and suppliers ensuring they meet scope and schedule requirements, recording all for commercial assessment.
- Update and maintain cost databases, standard estimate templates, and precedent files to promote consistent and efficient estimating methods.
- Work alongside design, commercial, and site teams to resolve technical queries, validate assumptions, and ensure synchronization of the schedule, methods, and costs.
- Prepare pricing breakdowns, cost summaries, and tender submission materials, both electronic and physical, for review by senior management and clients.
- Contribute to risk management by preparing contingency allowances, conducting sensitivity analyses, and identifying areas for cost savings.
- Maintain accurate documentation within the Document Management System and estimating libraries ensuring transparency and audit compliance.
- Participate in bid meetings, record minutes, track follow-up actions, and provide prompt updates on pricing progress to relevant stakeholders.
- Comply with company policies on health and safety, quality assurance, and data security throughout all estimating tasks.
Candidate Profile
- Demonstrated experience as a Construction Estimator preferably within a main contracting or consultancy environment, including familiarity with commercial tendering processes.
- Strong numerical skills and keen attention to detail, experienced in preparing measurement take-offs and bills of quantities.
- Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook; prior use of estimating software, cost databases, and Document Management Systems is advantageous.
- Sound knowledge of construction techniques, equipment, materials, and subcontractor procurement methods.
- Excellent organizational and time management capabilities with the ability to manage priorities and meet demanding tender deadlines.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills enabling professional interaction with colleagues, clients, subcontractors, and suppliers.
- Self-driven, proactive, and solution-oriented approach with capacity to function independently and collaboratively within a team.
