Equipment Technician

About the Role

As an Equipment Technician at Children's National Hospital, you will be responsible for sanitizing, preparing, storing, and restocking medical equipment and supplies used in patient care areas. This role demands strict adherence to infection control protocols. You'll adjust and store equipment as needed, remove soiled items for disinfection or repair, and uphold cleanliness and proper maintenance according to manufacturer guidelines and infection control standards.

Responsibilities

• Collect contaminated equipment and supplies from multiple locations and promptly return them to the department.
• Adhere to infection control procedures to thoroughly clean, disinfect, and reassemble equipment such as incubators and radiant warmers for safe patient and staff use.
• Maintain adequate stock levels of equipment and supplies in assigned areas, including managing par levels and exchanging gas cylinders when necessary.
• Notify appropriate personnel when supplies or equipment need replenishment; coordinate ordering from the warehouse and managing equipment repairs through biomedical services.
• Organize storage to ensure easy access to equipment and supplies by clinical staff in patient care units.
• Document equipment and supply needs accurately and communicate them to relevant department staff to maintain appropriate inventory levels.
• Under manager supervision, communicate with supplier representatives when necessary.
• Participate actively in at least 80% of department staff meetings and in-service trainings.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED is mandatory.
• A minimum of one year hospital experience is required.
• Experience with infection control, biomedical equipment, and medical applications or a background in respiratory care is preferred.
• Knowledge level equivalent to completing four years of high school education.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
• Basic computer proficiency, including ability to log into Windows-based PCs.
• Physical capability to move, lift (over 50 lbs), and carry equipment and gas cylinders, standing or walking for extended durations, plus ability to reach and stoop as needed.
• Strong interpersonal skills to work courteously with hospital staff, patients, and visitors.
• Ability to disassemble, wash, and reassemble moderately complex medical equipment correctly.
• Skill in ordering supplies and managing equipment effectively to prevent disruptions in patient care.
