Role overview
The EHS/ESG Coordinator will report to the Group EHS Manager and support the rollout, upkeep, and continual improvement of Environmental, Health, and Safety standards together with ESG practices across the assigned companies.
Fire safety and emergency readiness
This role helps keep the organization aligned with the Fire Risk Reduction Rules, 2007, by making sure fire protection systems, emergency plans, and staff preparedness measures are in place and maintained.
- Confirm that the facilities have been checked by the relevant authorities and that a current fire clearance certificate is available.
- Organize, document, and carry out fire drills twice each year, then share practical recommendations for improvement.
- Train employees on basic fire response, first aid basics, and emergency preparedness.
- Carry out routine site inspections and advise the EHS Manager on ways to strengthen fire safety across the facilities.
- Work with service providers to ensure firefighting equipment and fire alarm systems are serviced and properly recorded.
- Make sure fire safety information is visible, including fire action plans and emergency contact details.
Accident and incident management
- Maintain a process for reporting and recording all accidents, incidents, and serious near misses in the workplace.
- Investigate workplace incidents and accidents, and recommend controls to reduce the chance of repeat events.
- Review incident trends and prepare improvement actions based on the findings.
- Support injured employees in accessing medical attention.
PPE compliance and welfare facilities
- Assess task and risk requirements to determine the most suitable PPE, and guide management on procurement.
- Carry out PPE audits to confirm employees, contractors, and visitors are equipped appropriately and using PPE correctly across all sites.
- Train staff on the correct use of PPE and why it matters.
- Ensure welfare provisions such as drinking water, lockers, changing rooms, and first aid boxes are available and suitable.
- Check that clean drinking water is accessible at all workplaces and that cups are available for employee use.
- Ensure there are clean, enclosed changing rooms for men and women.
- Make sure lockers are fumigated regularly and that each employee, including casual workers and contractors, has a locker.
- Confirm that first aid boxes are stocked and that resting bays are available.
Hygiene, housekeeping, and ergonomics
The position also covers workplace cleanliness, orderly layout, and ergonomic risk reduction across operational areas.
- Inspect washrooms, canteens, changing rooms, and kitchens regularly to ensure sanitary conditions are maintained.
- Verify that washrooms have running water, soap, hand dryers, tissue dispensers, sanitary bins where needed, lighting, and ventilation.
- Check that canteens include handwashing stations, soap, organic waste bins, seating, and are free from pest issues.
- Confirm that kitchens are fitted with dishwashing sinks, warm water, disinfectant baths, dishwashing soap, clean storage cabinets, and are free from pest infestation.
- Keep workstations orderly, floors safe, emergency exits clear, and aisles marked with adequate spacing for pallet trucks and forklifts.
- Ensure machine layouts and storage areas are arranged safely and efficiently.
- Coordinate with cleaning providers for regular deep cleaning and assess hygiene performance.
- Prepare housekeeping reports.
- Reduce ergonomic strain by ensuring lifting equipment is available, seats have backrests and height adjustment, and ladders are provided for access to high storage areas.
Electrical and machinery safety
- Train employees on electrical safety practices.
- Ensure electrical appliances, high-powered tools, wiring, and fixtures are inspected every 6 months.
- Inspect work areas routinely for hazards such as overloaded sockets, open cable trays, exposed electrical panels, and poor cable management, then drive corrective action.
- Check machines and equipment to confirm guarding, operator controls, sensors, and emergency stop buttons are working and have not been bypassed.
- Support a preventive maintenance schedule and ensure equipment faults are repaired without delay.
- Provide regular machine safety training for operators.
Contractor, air quality, and chemical safety
- Issue permits to work and apply the contractor management policy correctly.
- Carry out toolbox talks before contractor work begins on site.
- Monitor contractor activity to ensure EHS standards are not breached.
- Track indoor air quality and heat stress risks, and recommend improvements where conditions are poor.
- Support mechanical controls such as extraction systems, ventilation, air conditioning, humidifiers, or dehumidifiers where needed.
- Promote cleaning and dust control practices to improve air quality.
- Ensure suitable respiratory PPE is available and used.
- Implement the chemical safety plan, including availability of MSDS and SOP documents at chemical stations.
- Train employees on chemical safety and safe work practices.
- Ensure correct PPE is available for chemical handling and that spill containment equipment is provided and understood.
Waste management, grievance handling, and EHS compliance
- Support compliance with Waste Management Regulations, 2006 by ensuring a licensed waste handler is in place.
- Check that contracted waste handlers are compliant and have all required documents.
- Maintain and audit the waste management file, including the SLA, valid licenses, and waste tracking records.
- Ensure waste is separated at source and that bins are clearly labeled.
- Train employees on segregation, recycling, reuse, and safe disposal.
- Hold regular discussions with employee groups and representatives through toolbox talks, EHS committee meetings, and similar forums.
- Promote anonymous feedback channels such as suggestion boxes and a toll-free line, and help resolve employee concerns and suggestions.
- Work with HR on recognition initiatives for high-performing employees.
- Keep all statutory audits, licenses, certifications, inspections, medical checks, and training current.
- Support compliance with all relevant national and local requirements, including NEMA, County Government laws, Water Resource Management Authority, and County Water and Sewerage Company requirements.
- Help ensure EHS policy requirements are implemented consistently across the companies.
Qualifications and experience
A bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Science, Environmental Health, Engineering, or another related discipline is required. Professional training should include NEBOSH IGC or an equivalent safety qualification, along with fire safety, first aid, and emergency response training. ISO 45001 and/or ISO 14001 internal auditor certification is an added advantage. The ideal candidate should have at least 3 years of experience in EHS within a manufacturing, packaging, or similar industrial setting, including workplace risk assessments, incident investigations, and coordination of statutory inspections and compliance. Experience with ESG reporting or sustainability work will be beneficial.
