Role overview
The St. John’s Farmers’ Market is seeking a full-time Custodian to keep the facility and grounds clean, well maintained, and ready for daily operations as well as special events. This role suits someone who enjoys hands-on physical work, takes pride in a tidy environment, and can contribute to a busy, inclusive community setting.
What you’ll do
- Keep all indoor and outdoor areas clean, with primary responsibility for routine and ongoing building upkeep.
- Support other cleaning staff by helping organize priorities and sharing practical cleaning methods.
- Assist with setting up, taking down, and cleaning up after markets and events of different sizes.
- Carry out minor repairs and maintenance tasks, and regularly inspect the property for facility issues.
- Follow occupational health and safety practices as well as food safety requirements.
What the role needs
- Availability to work every Saturday and Sunday as part of the regular schedule is required.
- Ability to work independently with little supervision and stay on top of ongoing cleaning tasks.
- Comfort handling light maintenance and upkeep in a commercial environment.
- Readiness for daily physical work, including cleaning, lifting, carrying tables, and arranging spaces for events.
- Ability to move or lift up to 40 pounds.
- Willingness to guide support staff when needed.
- A friendly, adaptable, and approachable attitude in a busy, diverse, and inclusive workplace.
Bonus background
Familiarity with Newfoundland and Labrador food safety guidelines or OHS rules is an advantage but not required. Experience with commercial kitchen equipment or cleaning restaurant kitchens is also a plus, though not mandatory.
Compensation and schedule
This is a full-time, in-person position with 35 hours of work per week. Pay is $22.00 per hour. Weekend work is part of the normal schedule, and both Saturday and Sunday are required.
