Job Summary
The custodian is responsible for helping maintain a safe, clean, attractive, and efficient environment for students, staff, and visitors so the school can function effectively for learning and daily activities.
Reporting Structure
This role reports to the principal, assistant principal, or director and may receive direction from school administrators, district administration, or the assistant superintendent.
Key Duties
- Participate in meetings, training sessions, workshops, and similar activities to stay prepared for required job tasks.
- Keep the building, grounds, sidewalks, driveways, and play areas tidy and well maintained.
- Operate heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems to maintain suitable seasonal temperatures while using fuel, water, and electricity efficiently.
- Raise and lower the U.S. flag as required.
- Sweep classrooms every day and dust furniture.
- Watch activity around work areas to help prevent injuries and maintain site safety, reporting concerns right away.
- Clean hallways after school each day and during the day whenever needed.
- Scrub, hose down, and disinfect toilets and floors daily, and clean and sanitize fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
- Wash windows inside and outside at least twice a year, or more often if needed.
- Keep outdoor areas free of trash and debris.
- Carry out yard work such as grass cutting and tree trimming when assigned to keep the campus safe and appealing.
- Maintain floors in clean, attractive, and well-preserved condition.
- Perform small building repairs as needed.
- Service motors and other mechanical equipment on a regular maintenance schedule.
- Report school property damage to the principal immediately.
- Remain on campus during school hours and also during approved non-school hours when extended use of the building has been authorized.
- Open and close the building each school day and ensure doors and windows are secured and lights are off except where needed for safety.
- Track supplies, equipment, and fuel inventory and request replacements early enough to avoid disruption to the educational process.
- Restock classroom and restroom supplies so daily needs are met.
- Carry out ongoing general maintenance, upkeep, and repair work.
- Move furniture and equipment within the building for activities or as directed.
- Complete summer maintenance tasks such as stripping and waxing floors, moving furniture, and painting.
- Take responsibility for any district-owned fixed asset assigned and use it according to district acceptable-use policies.
- Secure facilities and grounds to reduce property damage, equipment loss, and potential liability.
- Participate in periodic evaluations according to state and board policy.
- Protect confidentiality at all times.
- Maintain regular, dependable, in-person attendance and punctuality, which are essential parts of the role.
- Carry out other duties assigned by the Board of Education, superintendent, administrator, director, or district policy.
- Follow the Employee Conduct Policy, GAB, all district policies and procedures, and the Mississippi Educator Code of Conduct.
Qualifications and Skills
The role requires a high school diploma or GED. Candidates should pass the agility test and preferably bring prior related experience. The position calls for the ability to operate industrial maintenance and cleaning equipment, including electrical cleaning tools and common hand tools, while following safety practices. The work also requires the ability to understand multi-step written and spoken instructions, organize activities, collect data, use job-related equipment, adapt to changing priorities, meet schedules, work effectively with a team, and handle frequent interruptions. Some problem solving is needed, including limited-to-moderate equipment troubleshooting and independent interpretation of data where necessary. English proficiency is required for communication and instruction. The position is performed under direct supervision using standardized routines, with occasional responsibility for giving information or advice to others.
Physical Requirements
This job involves regular talking and listening in English, along with significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, and climbing. The employee will frequently stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl, and will also need fine finger dexterity. The schedule generally involves 5% sitting, 70% walking, and 25% standing. Work conditions include minimal temperature variation and some exposure to injury or illness risk. The role requires routinely lifting and moving up to 35 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds, as well as close vision.
Work Environment
The work takes place across an active school campus, both indoors and outdoors, rather than in a standard office setting. Noise levels are usually low to moderate, though they can become high at times.
Terms of Employment
Salary, workdays, and the work year are set by the Rankin County Board of Education.
Evaluation
Job performance will be reviewed according to the Rankin County School Board policy for employee evaluation.
