Costuming Technician

Role overview

The Costuming Technician is in charge of caring for, maintaining, and repairing the costume, prop, and puppet assets used in live entertainment. The role also includes creating new show props and costume components in-house when needed.

This position partners closely with the Senior Director of Costuming, costuming leadership, seamstresses, prosthetics, hair and makeup artists, attendants, and other entertainment team members to keep wardrobe and related pieces in excellent condition. The technician is expected to contribute actively to artistic goals, uphold consistent quality, share expertise, support show and event production, and maintain a constructive attitude while protecting the standards and values of the productions across the properties.

Core duties

• Build, restore, and service costumes, character and mascot pieces, craft items, props, and puppets, including painting, airbrushing, gluing, wiring or repairing electrical components, and similar hands-on tasks.
• Modify and mend existing wardrobe, props, and other costume-related elements with precision and workmanship that supports show quality.
• Support the crew with daily laundry tasks such as washing, hanging, ironing, and steaming costume items when required.
• Assist the Senior Director of Costuming in keeping the costume inventory accurate and current.
• Monitor supplies and arrange replacement orders in a timely way.
• Maintain clear communication across the costuming team.
• Carry out additional duties assigned by senior management.

Additional responsibilities

• Provide support in a team-lead capacity in other entertainment functions when needed.
• Attend department meetings as requested.
• Work professionally and courteously with colleagues and outside vendors.
• Help with administrative work when necessary.
• Be able to lift and move moderately heavy items.
• Share information and practical know-how with coworkers.
• Contribute to keeping documentation current and well organized.

Qualifications

Essential:

• Higher secondary education or an equivalent qualification.
• At least 2 years of artistic craft experience.
• Hands-on ability in painting, drawing, gluing, sculpting, airbrushing, and electrical systems work.
• Working knowledge of carpentry.
• Experience using sewing machines and doing hand sewing.
• Familiarity with glues and solvents.
• Good command of English.
• Prior experience working with performers.
• Computer proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Strong attention to detail and solid organizational skills.

Preferred:

• Associate degree or above in theatre or fine arts.
• About 5 years of fine arts background.
• Around 3 years of experience in a theme park, theatrical production, or cruise ship environment.
• Background in costume repair and manufacturing.
• Advanced computer skills.
• Specialization in costume technology.
• Knowledge and experience with 3D printing.
• Ability to use both industrial and domestic sewing machines.
• Experience handling character or mascot costume pieces.
• Theme park experience.
• People management ability.
