This role is for a Content Designer who will help build products that are easy to navigate, visually strong, and ambitious in what they can do. As an early contributor, you will help shape product direction and the team’s design culture.

Role overview

You will work closely with a compact group of product designers and cross-functional partners to shape present-day and future product experiences. The work spans the full design process for new features and improvements across OpenAI products.

We are looking for someone with strong craft leadership, sound product judgment, technical curiosity, and a systems-oriented approach. You should be eager to understand what AI can and cannot do, and to evolve content design practices with AI in mind.

This position can be based in San Francisco or New York, and relocation support is available for new hires.

What you will do

  • Own content strategy for important product areas, from early framing and information architecture through final UX copy and launch refinement.
  • Define product concepts, user mental models, storylines, terminology, and the places where clarity or trust could break down.
  • Develop naming, framing, and language systems for new, unclear, or experimental AI experiences.
  • Build reusable content frameworks, naming rules, terminology guidance, product voice guidance, and domain playbooks that can be used across teams.
  • Support the language infrastructure behind the product, including glossaries, pattern libraries, review steps, evaluation rubrics, prompt libraries, and quality standards.
  • Use AI-enabled tools and workflows to extend content and design output, including prototyping, prompt development, design system components, UX tooling, and faster iteration cycles.
  • Set standards for AI-assisted or model-generated product copy, including prompt patterns, tone guardrails, and quality checks.
  • Participate in user research to better understand needs, comprehension, expectations, and trust.
  • Coach designers and cross-functional partners on scalable content design practices and clearer product communication.
  • Help improve the Content Design team’s culture, operating cadence, and repeatable methods.

What we are looking for

The ideal candidate has 5+ years of experience leading content design for large-scale software products and a history of shipping strong work in zero-to-one or ambiguous product spaces.

You should be able to measure, explain, and advocate for how content design improves product quality, user understanding, trust, and adoption. Experience building scalable content systems and governance is important, especially for decisions around naming, terminology, voice and tone, UX writing, and content QA.

You should understand localization best practices and know how to collaborate effectively with localization teams. We are also looking for someone who has shaped product voice and tone across complex product ecosystems and who can work well with AI research, product, design, engineering, policy, and other technical partners to turn complex requirements into clear product experiences.

Experience with prompt creation, model-generated content, AI-assisted workflows, evaluations, quality rubrics, and UX tooling is highly relevant. A drive to create content systems that help teams work faster will help you succeed here.
