About the Role

Join the Department of Conservation as a Facilities Officer based in Wellington for a 12-month fixed term. In this role, you will ensure Conservation House runs efficiently by managing facilities services that empower DOC staff to focus on conserving New Zealand’s natural heritage. Your responsibilities include overseeing building services, maintenance, safety, security, and compliance to maintain a high standard workplace.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage daily operations of Conservation House facilities, coordinating maintenance and contractor activities.
  • Serve as the main contact for workplace matters, ensuring timely and professional resolution.
  • Promote a safe and compliant environment through health & safety programs, business continuity, security, and emergency readiness.
  • Organize staff relocations and equipment moves, and seek opportunities to improve facilities processes and services.
  • Develop strong partnerships with staff, contractors, building owners, and service providers to deliver excellent customer-oriented support.
  • Be present onsite daily and take part in on-call duties every alternate week, with an allowance provided for after-hours calls.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Proven background in facilities, property, or building management involving maintenance, compliance, and vendor coordination.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships across teams and with external suppliers.
  • Solid judgement and problem-solving skills to manage priorities and make timely decisions.
  • Customer-centric mindset focused on anticipating needs and developing practical solutions.
  • Familiarity with health and safety protocols, emergency response, and security systems.
  • Strong organizational skills with great attention to detail and dedication to quality outcomes.
  • Continuous improvement focus to identify efficiencies and enhance workplace services.
  • Excellent communication skills and cultural competency for engaging with diverse stakeholders, including tangata whenua partnerships.

Compensation and Additional Information

Salary range: $65,590 - $82,000 annually, based on skills and experience.

The position requires full-time onsite presence in Wellington.

You must hold a valid New Zealand work visa for the employment duration.

Secondment candidates should obtain written approval from their line manager before applying and attach this to their application.
