About the Role
The City of Winnipeg is seeking a Claims Adjuster 1 to join the Corporate Finance Department. This temporary, full-time position extends until November 30, 2027, with work hours from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The primary workplace is located at 185 King Street, with a flexible hybrid work arrangement subject to approval. The Claims Adjuster 1 will independently manage routine recovery claims, overseeing all recoverable damages from external parties. The role involves handling low to medium complexity claims by investigating and compiling factual information for legal liability determinations related to claims against or made by the City.
Core Responsibilities
- Analyze and investigate claims for damages to City property and vehicles to recover costs from responsible external parties.
- Review and resolve claims made against the City for property and vehicle damage.
- Set precise reserves for settlements and expenses.
- Provide guidance, coaching, and constructive feedback to junior staff members.
- Carry out additional tasks consistent with the job classification as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
- Post-secondary education in Business, Office Administration, or an equivalent blend of education, experience, and training.
- Progress towards Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) certification, having completed at least two CIP courses from the Insurance Institute of Canada.
- A minimum of one year of claims experience within a claims department, including property and liability claims adjustment, investigative techniques, negotiation, and claim settlements.
- Proven skills conducting investigations and negotiations while applying principles and techniques to various liability, property, and auto claims.
- Strong written communication capabilities for composing detailed reports and professional correspondence.
- Effective verbal communication skills to interview diverse individuals, address public inquiries, and manage sensitive or escalated situations.
- Excellent interpersonal abilities to interact professionally with employees from public and private sectors, including upset clients.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Outlook, Excel, and Teams.
- Analytical and observational skills to assess gathered information critically and ensure thorough investigations.
- Knowledge or quick acquisition ability of relevant legislation, by-laws, and statutes applicable to claims adjusting.
- Self-motivated, able to work independently while managing deadlines, priorities, and pressure effectively.
- Capability to maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive information.
- Applicants with foreign education must provide an official Canadian equivalency assessment from a recognized assessment agency.
Terms and Conditions
- This position requires legal eligibility to work in Canada, including maintaining a valid work permit if applicable.
- A satisfactory Police Record Check is mandatory before employment, obtained at candidate expense.
- Candidates need to be available for work during evenings, weekends, and overtime as necessary.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary ranges from $1960.50 to $2415.93 biweekly, following the Claims Adjuster 1 classification under the C.U.P.E Collective Agreement (currently under review).
