Overview
The Barge Maintenance Manager is entrusted with managing and directing the maintenance activities for jack-up barges to guarantee reliable operations, adherence to regulations, and cost-efficient management. This position focuses on collaborating with the maintenance team to optimize preventive and corrective procedures, reduce downtime, and prolong asset longevity.
Key Duties
- Supervise schedules for preventive upkeep on mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and structural components of jack-up barges.
- Organize and oversee corrective maintenance, diagnosing issues, and repairs to quickly restore functionality.
- Monitor and track all maintenance efforts through the Planned Maintenance System (PMS).
- Perform root cause failure analyses on repetitive problems and implement sustainable corrective measures.
- Ensure all maintenance complies with maritime regulations and standards from classification societies (ABS, DNV), flag states, and international conventions including IMO, SOLAS, and MARPOL.
- Manage certifications, inspections, and surveys mandated by classification bodies, flag authorities, and clients.
- Oversee upkeep of critical safety systems such as firefighting equipment, lifesaving appliances, navigation aids, and dynamic positioning systems when applicable.
- Plan and supervise dry-dockings and significant repair or refit projects, including preparing specifications, choosing vendors, and onsite monitoring.
- Collaborate with barge captains, chief engineers, port engineers, captains, and operation managers to synchronize maintenance with ongoing projects while minimizing operational interruptions.
- Control inventory of spare parts and consumables, balancing availability of essential spares with cost-effective stock levels.
- Develop and manage annual maintenance budgets, track spending, and generate cost forecasts and variance reports.
- Evaluate and approve performance and proposals from vendors and service providers.
- Maintain comprehensive documentation of all maintenance work, including equipment histories, inspection records, and certification statuses.
- Lead and mentor both onboard and shore-based maintenance staff to ensure technical skills, safety standards, and company protocols are met.
- Conduct regular maintenance audits, inspections, and risk assessments to identify deficiencies and improve processes.
- Participate in emergency response planning and drills to guarantee readiness and equipment reliability during critical events.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering, with prior experience as a Chief Engineer.
- At least 8 to 10 years of progressively responsible maintenance experience within offshore or marine sectors, including a minimum of 3 years in a managerial or supervisory role aboard jack-up barges.
- Solid technical understanding of barge-related systems such as engines, generators, jacking mechanisms, cranes, ballast systems, and supporting auxiliary equipment.
- Knowledgeable about classification society standards and international maritime safety and environmental regulations.
- Proven leadership capabilities, project management expertise, and sound decision-making skills.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Willingness and capability to travel offshore or to shipyards as necessary.
