Position Overview

The Associate Research & Innovation (R&I) Chemist role serves as an entry point into the technical career path for formulation chemists. This role focuses on building expertise in categories such as colour cosmetics, sunscreens, and skincare products. The individual will execute laboratory batches, participate in design of experiments (DOEs), maintain thorough documentation, and carry out analytical testing in line with product specifications.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare laboratory batches across various formulation stages for client submissions, stability and compatibility assessments, adhering strictly to internal protocols and meticulous documentation standards.
• Develop new shades within assigned colour cosmetics categories, managing both anhydrous and hydrous systems by following briefs and benchmarks.
• Support senior R&I Chemists by assisting in formula and shade development across cosmetic product lines.
• Adjust textures and colours as needed and assess completed batches using instrumentation, visual evaluations, and skin application methods.
• Conduct analytical testing for all formulas and batches according to category-specific guidelines and record outcomes systematically.
• Perform in-process stability assessments on lab batches, document observations, and provide regular updates to supervising Chemists and Lab Managers.
• Prepare and maintain electronic lab notebook entries for all experimental batches, including procedures, stability data, and test results, conforming to SOPs.
• Ensure cleanliness and hygiene of laboratory equipment, instruments, and workspaces.
• Adhere to departmental health and safety standards, SOPs, GMP, GLP, and regulatory requirements.
• Participate in client visits and project huddles as required.
• Carry out risk assessments on newly developed shades.
• Stay informed on new raw materials, technologies, and market trends relevant to the cosmetics industry.
• Engage in troubleshooting and problem-solving activities including DOE execution, stability analysis, and production support.
• Provide guidance and training to Lab Technicians and fellow Associate Chemists as necessary.
• Assist with additional R&I lab tasks as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Post-secondary education in Science, ideally Chemistry or a closely related discipline, or equivalent experience.
• Post-graduate certificate or diploma in Regulatory Affairs.
• At least 1-2 years of experience working in Regulatory Affairs.
• Familiarity with Visual/Coptis software is advantageous.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel.
• Strong communication abilities, both written and verbal.
• Effective problem-solving skills with a capable troubleshooting mindset.
• Self-driven, detail-oriented, able to perform well in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
• Team-oriented with the capacity to manage multiple tasks concurrently.
• Strong organizational and planning skills.
• Capability to handle some repetitive work effectively.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this position is approximately $50,000 to $60,000 annually. Beyond base pay, Cosmetica offers a comprehensive total rewards package, which may include bonuses, equity participation, benefits, retirement plans, and paid time off. Final salary will consider experience, skills, market factors, and company equity.
