Art Director / Digital Designer

About the Role

The Philadelphia Inquirer is seeking an Art Director / Digital Designer to craft engaging visual content that enhances storytelling. This position involves collaborating with editors and developers to create visual plans representing stories effectively. Located in Greater Philadelphia, the role follows a hybrid office schedule and is unionized.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and lead art direction for stories across news, features, and sports for online, print, and social media platforms.
• Initiate and manage illustration projects from concept through completion, including producing original artwork.
• Collaborate with the visuals team to conceptualize and execute story visualizations.
• Independently create visual stories and work closely with reporters and editors on various projects.
• Foster an inclusive and supportive workplace environment.

Experience and Skills Required

• Exceptional visual design capabilities, with passion for illustration, photography, typography, and overall design.
• Minimum three years of experience in art direction, preferably within editorial settings.
• Proficiency with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign.
• Knowledge of animation techniques is advantageous.
• Familiarity with front-end development technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
• Self-driven with strong deadline management and adaptability in a fast-paced news environment.
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills.
• Local knowledge of Philadelphia and surrounding areas is a bonus.
