About the Role
This contract opportunity is designed for experienced physicists who want to apply advanced subject knowledge to AI development. In this role, you will help test and improve AI models by challenging their understanding of physical laws, mathematical reasoning, and scientific consistency. The work is fully remote, flexible, and suited to researchers or academics who prefer to contribute on their own schedule. Prior AI experience is not required.
The role is with Alignerr and is structured as an hourly contract. The commitment is typically between 10 and 40 hours per week.
What You Will Do
- Create demanding physics questions at a PhD-qualifying level, covering advanced reasoning and derivations in areas such as quantum mechanics, electrodynamics, classical mechanics, and thermodynamics.
- Develop reference solutions that are precise, fully worked out, and suitable as benchmark answers, with careful handling of constants, units, and logical steps.
- Review AI-generated calculations, simulations, and proofs to check whether the physics is internally consistent and aligned with first principles.
- Identify where model outputs break physical rules and provide structured expert feedback to improve reasoning around constraints such as conservation laws, boundary conditions, and symmetry.
Who You Are
- You have a PhD in Applied Physics, Physics, Engineering Physics, or a closely related discipline, either completed or near completion.
- You have strong command of the main foundations of physics, including classical mechanics, electrodynamics, statistical mechanics, and quantum mechanics.
- You can explain complex scientific ideas and mathematical derivations clearly and in an organized way.
- You are highly detail-oriented, with strong care for units, scientific notation, and proof structure.
- You are dependable, self-directed, and comfortable working independently.
- No prior background in AI or machine learning is needed.
Nice to Have
- Experience with annotation work, scientific data review, or quality assurance for research-related outputs.
- Familiarity with tools such as MATLAB, COMSOL, Python with NumPy/SciPy, or similar computational software.
- Exposure to research publication, technical writing, or teaching in an academic setting.
Why Join
- Contribute to advanced AI projects alongside leading research teams.
- Enjoy fully remote work with asynchronous flexibility.
- Work independently while still following clearly defined project tasks.
- Use your research background on an impactful and high-stakes technology problem.
- There may be continued assignments and contract extensions as new projects begin.
Role Details
This is a remote hourly contract position based in Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand. The role is flexible and typically requires 10 to 40 hours per week.
