Role Overview

NEXTDC is seeking a trades or technical professional to join the facilities team as a Data Centre Technician in a 24/7 operating environment. This is an entry-level opportunity with full on-the-job training covering data centre facility management and critical infrastructure such as cooling, electrical systems, cabling infrastructure, building monitoring and fire systems.

Located in Port Melbourne, the role supports the Facility Management team in the daily operation of the data centre by delivering efficient technical maintenance and strong customer service.

Shift Pattern and Work Conditions

The role requires working a rotating 4–5–5 roster, with day shifts from 7:00am to 7:00pm and night shifts from 7:00pm to 7:00am.

The position is primarily hands-on and facility-focused rather than IT-focused, with practical operational responsibilities. Travel between sites may be required during shifts from time to time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide cabling support for customer racks and areas, including electrical and data cabling work.
  • Respond to remote hands service requests.
  • Support vendor coordination for upkeep of core electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Identify facility issues and work to resolve them promptly.
  • Monitor building management and monitoring systems around the clock and escalate issues internally or to external vendors as needed.
  • Make sure visitors and contractors follow all NEXTDC facility rules.
  • Carry out manual handling tasks as required.

Requirements

  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to communicate clearly.
  • A positive, proactive and practical approach to work.
  • Basic familiarity with data centres, data cabling and cable management is preferred.
  • Genuine interest in telecommunications and understanding how systems operate.
  • Problem-solving mindset with an eagerness to fix issues and learn.
  • TAFE Certificate in Telecommunications is desirable.
  • Trade qualifications such as Electrician or HVAC Technician are desirable.
  • Australian citizenship is required due to security clearance requirements.
