Job description

Position Overview

The Specialist - Server Support is a key functional and strategic leader within the Network Operations team, responsible for overseeing the maintenance, support, backup, and security of the Halton District School Board’s (HDSB) server infrastructure. This includes both physical and cloud servers, enterprise applications, and identity and access management systems. The role involves creating and continuously improving organizational standards, monitoring environments, and proactively addressing security and operational challenges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and guidance on the board's enterprise server environment and Information Services operations.
  • Collaborate with staff across departments to form teams addressing operational needs and incident responses.
  • Lead and support the Server Team and related groups to enhance policies, monitoring, and troubleshooting processes.
  • Work closely with executive leadership to manage data center hardware and software solutions.
  • Handle sensitive information and prepare management reports recommending process or training improvements.
  • Oversee complex technical issues and coordinate activities of analyst levels and other IT Specialists.
  • Manage security incident documentation, remediation efforts, and continuously enhance backup and disaster recovery protocols.
  • Plan and execute IT projects, managing resources, budgets, risks, and stakeholder communications to ensure timely and successful delivery.
  • Maintain the VM environment and identity provider systems, ensuring system updates and security align with organizational policies.
  • Develop and audit patch management programs and collaborate with security teams to minimize data risks.
  • Create and maintain detailed technical documentation, standards, and training materials for IT systems and procedures.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 7 years of relevant experience.
  • Certifications such as ISC2, ISACA, EC-Council, CompTIA, Microsoft Azure Administrator, Microsoft Identity and Access Administrator, AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, Fortinet NSE 4, and Project Management Certification.
  • Ability to work with high accountability, discretion, and confidentiality.
  • Strong critical thinking and independent working skills.
  • Excellent communication abilities and interpersonal skills for leading teams and interacting with non-technical stakeholders.
  • Fluency in AI concepts including prompt engineering and critical thinking.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10 years of relevant experience, including 2 years in cybersecurity roles.
  • Ongoing professional development with additional certifications such as Powershell scripting, in-depth Active Directory knowledge, Microsoft Certified: Identity and Access Administrator Associate, VMWare Certified Professional (VCP), Fortinet NSE5+, Azure Security Admin, Google Admin Level 2+, and others.
  • Certificates in ICT and School Board Administration from the University of Guelph and OASBO certificate in Information Management, Privacy, and Access.

Work Conditions and Additional Information

The position is based at J.W. Singleton Education Centre working 35 hours per week throughout the year. Employees may work remotely up to 50% of scheduled hours with supervisor approval, following the Board’s Work from Home policy. The Board provides funding for professional development as per employment terms.
