Public Health Inspector I

Position Overview

The Public Health Inspector I role focuses on delivering frontline services under the Safe Healthy Environments program across Medicine Hat and nearby municipalities. This position involves generalist responsibilities covering multiple environmental public health areas such as food safety, safe built environments, emergency preparedness, drinking and recreational water safety, nuisance control, and communicable disease management. Inspectors work to protect all Alberta residents, including vulnerable groups, through detailed inspections and monitoring.

Key Duties

As an appointed Executive Officer under the Public Health Act, you will oversee comprehensive environmental public health initiatives within a designated geographic region. Responsibilities include preventing and mitigating environmental health hazards—physical, chemical, or biological—that could impact individual or community health. Your role involves conducting inspections, disease surveillance, consultations, and enforcing public health legislation concerning safe food, drinking water, recreational water, built environments, and overall healthy environments.

Work Conditions and Schedule

The position is temporary, full-time, with a standard shift length of 7.75 hours, arranged on a rotating schedule that includes working 2 to 4 weekends annually or more as required. Employees must have a valid driver's license and access to a vehicle for fieldwork. The salary range is CAD 44.93 to 59.68 per hour.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health or a related discipline along with completion of a recognized Environmental Health technical program.
• Certification in Public Health Inspection (Canada).
• Active membership in good standing with the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI).

• Willingness to work weekends as necessary.
• Capability to manage a demanding district with routine, complaint, and ad-hoc inspections while adhering to performance targets.
