Role summary
Largeton Group is hiring an experienced Level 2 Network Engineer for a large end-of-life network refresh program supporting PPL in the Louisville, Kentucky area. The assignment is expected to run for 06+ months and focuses on hands-on replacement and modernization of Cisco-based infrastructure such as routers, switches, and wireless access points.
This is an execution-heavy role for someone who is comfortable working independently across multiple facilities, following deployment runbooks, and handling structured network cutovers with minimal disruption to operations.
Location and work setup
The role is onsite five days a week at 820 W Broadway, Louisville, KY 40202. Candidates must be local or nearby to the location. Webex is listed as the interview format.
Key responsibilities
The engineer will be responsible for installing, configuring, replacing, and validating Cisco network equipment as part of the refresh initiative. Work includes pre-staging, provisioning, cutover support, post-install checks, troubleshooting, and collaboration with project and engineering teams.
Technical scope
The environment includes Cisco routing and switching platforms, wireless access points, VLANs, spanning tree, routing protocols such as OSPF and EIGRP, and basic WAN connectivity. The role also includes MDF/IDF support, rack-and-stack tasks, cabling verification, labeling, and physical-layer troubleshooting.
Requirements and experience
Applicants should bring 3 to 6 years of practical experience in network engineering or network field services. Strong hands-on experience in deployment environments is required, along with the ability to interpret diagrams, implementation plans, and runbooks. Excellent communication skills are expected, especially for explaining background and technical details during interviews.
Additional expectations include a valid driver’s license, the ability to travel locally between sites, and comfort working in network closets or other physically demanding environments. Cisco certification such as CCNA or an equivalent credential is preferred. Experience in utility, energy, or other regulated environments is also valued.
Working conditions and expectations
The position requires regular same-day travel to nearby PPL facilities in the Louisville area. Some work may occur early in the morning, after hours, or during maintenance windows to support cutovers. Success in the role will be measured by on-time completion of refresh work, low service disruption, accurate documentation, and strong coordination with stakeholders.
Additional notes
The client noted that prior candidates did not perform well in the final interview, particularly on switch infrastructure topics. New candidates should be prepared to clearly walk through their background and answer technical questions confidently.
The source indicates there are 2 roles to fill.
Duration is listed as 06+ months, while the role description also references a 12-month end-of-life network refresh program.
