About King’s Ely
King’s Ely is a historic co-educational day and boarding school in Ely, Cambridge, with origins dating back to at least 970AD. The school educates around 1100 students aged 2 to 18, including boarders, across several campuses with extensive facilities. Role Overview
The Kitchen Porter will be an essential member of the catering team, responsible for ensuring the kitchen environment is clean, safe, and hygienic. This role supports food preparation and maintains kitchen equipment and service areas to high standards, facilitating excellent food service for students, staff, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
- Wash and sanitize crockery, cutlery, trays, cooking utensils, and kitchen appliances.
- Safely operate commercial dishwashing machines.
- Maintain cleanliness of kitchen surfaces, workstations, floors, walls, and storage areas continually throughout the day.
- Dispose of waste following recycling and disposal protocols.
- Adhere to and complete cleaning schedules punctually and thoroughly.
- Ensure compliance with Food Hygiene Regulations and HACCP standards.
- Follow all Food Safety, Health & Safety, and COSHH guidelines, including wearing appropriate PPE and uniform.
- Report any accidents, hazards, or near-misses promptly to maintain workplace safety.
- Deliver courteous and professional service interaction with students, staff, and visitors.
- Participate in relevant training and staff meetings, support events and catering functions as needed.
Terms and Conditions
- Working hours are Monday to Friday from 2pm to 8pm, during 44 weeks annually (term time plus 4 weeks).
- The role starts in September 2026.
- Salary is £18,489 per annum.
- Automatic enrolment in a pension scheme with current contributions at 5% by employee and 3% by employer.
- Staff children may attend any part of the school subject to availability and admissions; staff are eligible for discretionary fee discounts from Reception year onwards.
