About the Role
RNZ invites an experienced and driven sports journalist to join its award-winning public media newsroom in New Zealand. The position requires creating original journalism that includes breaking news, exclusive stories, important issue exposés, and sharp analysis that aids audiences in understanding key moments in sports. The role encompasses producing compelling content across both audio and digital channels, meeting the demands of a dynamic newsroom environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver breaking exclusive sports news and original reports.
- Create insightful analyses and enterprise journalism that extend beyond simple match outcomes.
- Report on major news and important sporting events as they unfold.
- Research, write, and produce materials for radio, digital, and social media platforms.
- Establish and nurture strong contacts with athletes, coaches, administrators, and relevant sports figures.
- Present sports bulletins and provide live coverage when necessary.
- Produce audio content using appropriate recording and production techniques.
Candidate Profile
- Experience in sports news coverage and a genuine enthusiasm for the subject and its journalism.
- Record of breaking original stories and providing exclusive content.
- Outstanding writing skills with the ability to produce clear, engaging, and precise copy.
- Strong analytical capabilities with competence in delivering context and insightful commentary.
- Proven ability to maintain a wide and reliable network of contacts and sources.
- A firm commitment to accuracy, fairness, and public-interest journalism.
- Capability to produce high-quality content across multiple platforms.
- Comfort working collaboratively under fast-paced newsroom conditions.
As part of a small, friendly team, the candidate should be prepared to work flexible shifts including weekends, early mornings, and evenings to cover sports events.
