Overview
Big Happy is entering an exciting developmental phase and seeks a Financial Controller to oversee the company's comprehensive accounting function. This role ensures accuracy in financial records, timely closure of accounting periods, and equips leadership with critical data for informed decision-making. The position emphasizes developing scalable and audit-ready procedures and reports directly to the Head of Finance & Strategy while collaborating closely with teams from Finance, Legal, People, and Operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct the monthly, quarterly, and yearly financial close processes for multiple entities, guaranteeing on-time delivery of precise statements.
- Supervise accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger tasks, including invoicing, collection efforts, vendor payments, and reconciliations.
- Handle journal entries and general ledger postings with full ownership.
- Collaborate with the Finance team on budgeting, forecasting, and analyzing variances.
- Manage vendor expenditures, including reviewing and renewing contracts and consolidating spend.
- Oversee management of debt obligations, encompassing borrowings, repayments, compliance with covenants, and lender communications.
- Administer day-to-day cash activities such as liquidity planning, cash positioning, and maintaining bank relations.
- Lead efforts related to revenue recognition in accordance with ASC 606 standards.
- Develop and sustain a strong internal control framework across all business entities and locations.
- Maintain relationships with external auditors and tax consultants to ensure successful audits and timely compliance in multiple jurisdictions.
- Handle all intercompany financial transactions.
- Work jointly with Legal, HR, and Operations to support international business expansion and efficiency.
- Take charge of the NetSuite platform and core financial software, spearheading improvements in system optimization and reporting capabilities.
- Identify and execute initiatives streamlining accounting procedures to boost accuracy, efficiency, and scalability.
Qualifications and Expertise
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline; CPA certification is mandatory.
- Minimum six years of progressive experience in accounting, with at least three years serving as Controller or Assistant Controller.
- Background working within high-growth businesses featuring multiple entities and currencies.
- Proven success in establishing or enhancing financial close processes and internal control systems.
- Advanced proficiency with financial systems like NetSuite or equivalent ERP solutions; experience with bill.com or similar tools regarded favorably.
- Strong analytical and communication skills, capable of delivering clear financial insights to both finance and non-finance personnel.
- Self-motivated professional comfortable navigating dynamic, fast-paced, and ambiguous environments.
- Ability to collaborate cross-functionally and articulate financial concepts understandably.

Compensation and Location Details
The compensation range for this role is between $150,000 and $200,000 annually, inclusive of base salary and bonuses, with adjustments based on location and experience.
This is a remote position available exclusively to candidates located within the United States and operating in EST and CST time zones. Candidates must be outside commuting distance of the New York City office to qualify for remote work.
