Defense Analyst - Military Operations & International Humanitarian Law Specialist

Position Overview

We are seeking an expert in military operations and international humanitarian law (IHL) for a contract role, offering a flexible remote work arrangement. Compensation ranges from $50 to $90 per hour, with a commitment of 10 to 40 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop detailed taxonomies related to military usage and defense operations across varied conflict environments.
• Create dual-use triage frameworks to effectively differentiate between military and civilian technology applications.
• Define and delineate boundaries for prohibited assistance in accordance with international humanitarian law.
• Design rubrics assessing conflict risk and develop scenario-based tools to evaluate defense activities.
• Assess and improve policy-relevant benchmarks used for testing AI models within defense and humanitarian sectors.
• Produce comprehensive written and verbal reports that clarify complex concepts involving warfighting, targeting, and IHL.

Candidate Requirements

• Demonstrated substantial experience in military operations, defense analysis, or IHL, with senior roles ideally having eight or more years of relevant background.
• Possess an advanced academic degree or equivalent operational experience in areas such as military science, security studies, international law, or similar disciplines.
• Well-regarded professional reputation with proven expertise in warfighting tactics, operational planning, targeting law, or the application of humanitarian law.
• Specialized knowledge in applying conflict ethics, IHL principles, and defense policy frameworks within practical settings.
• Strong command of both written and oral communication skills with the ability to articulate technical and ethical subjects effectively.
• Experience engaging in research, policy development, or advisory roles in military, government, legal, or think-tank organizations.
