Position Overview

Chiquita is looking for an organized, proactive, and detail-focused Benefits Specialist to oversee the management of the company's health, welfare, supplementary, and retirement plans. This includes the Savings and Investment Plan (SIP), executive deferred compensation, defined benefit plans, and leave policies for North American operations. The Benefits Specialist administers employee benefit programs company-wide and provides guidance on various plans, devising cost-efficiency strategies that maximize coverage while minimizing expenses for both the company and its staff. This role serves as the main contact for benefits-related inquiries and contributes to fostering Chiquita's engaging workplace culture. The position is based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, reporting to the Manager of Human Resources, North America.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain standard procedures for administering employee benefits.
  • Work with the HR Manager to implement cross-training programs for HR staff, promoting understanding of benefit offerings including legacy pension plans.
  • Oversee management of employee benefits programs such as health and welfare plans, wellness initiatives, 401(k) retirement plan, pension schemes, flexible spending accounts, and deferred compensation plans. Analyze costs and policies to identify trends and ensure compliance, collaborating with insurance brokers on budgets, coverage, and stop-loss premiums.
  • Partner with HR, legal counsel, and consultants to interpret and assist in drafting plan documents and summaries.
  • Assist in overseeing annual ERISA audits for defined benefit and contribution plans.
  • Prepare mandatory reports for IRS and Department of Labor pertaining to benefit plan administration.
  • Support quarterly Employee Benefits Committee meetings through data analysis and reporting.
  • Ensure adherence to regulations such as ERISA, PPACA, HIPAA, and COBRA, staying updated on legislation impacting benefits.
  • Coordinate preparation and filing of reports required by federal and state agencies.
  • Manage and administer complex leave requests under FMLA, ADA, other state/local laws, and disability programs.
  • Collaborate with sister business units on shared benefit plans.
  • Address complex retirement and pension administration issues.
  • Exercise sound judgment in analyzing data and resolving diverse issues.
  • Lead the annual open enrollment process, including planning, communication, renewals, employee assistance, and reporting.
  • Work with HRIS teams to maintain benefits data integration and resolve system issues promptly.
  • Perform additional tasks as needed.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience managing employee benefits programs.
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Finance, or related field.
  • Proficient in HRIS systems; Workday experience preferred.
  • Practical experience supporting ERISA audits and Form 5500 reporting.
  • Familiarity with ERISA, COBRA, PPACA, HIPAA, and relevant regulations.
  • Advanced Excel proficiency including lookup functions, pivot tables, and data analysis.
  • Excellent organization, analytical, research, written communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • High attention to detail with ability to multitask independently and manage priorities with minimal oversight.
  • Strong collaboration skills and ability to build consensus across diverse groups.
  • Leadership and project management capabilities for dynamic environments.
  • Bilingual English and Spanish skills preferred.
