Role overview
Sports Business Journal is seeking an Assistant Editor, Daily to support its digital editorial output from Charlotte. This role focuses on editing, aggregation, homepage production, and supporting multimedia and social distribution across the publication’s digital products. The position calls for strong editorial judgment, comfort with fast-moving news cycles, and the ability to work accurately under pressure.
The schedule is roughly 10:00 am to 8:00 pm Monday through Thursday and 7:00 am to 2:00 pm on Sundays. The role is based in Charlotte with a hybrid in-office arrangement and sits within the Editorial department, reporting to the Director / Editions.
What you'll do
- Review and refine copy across publication channels, making sure stories are clearly written, properly sourced, and accurate in every detail.
- Draft headlines, subheads, captions, and other supporting copy for stories, graphics, and related materials.
- Help post podcasts and other audio, video, and social media content.
- Join editorial staff meetings and contribute to planning discussions.
- Partner with editors, reporters, and researchers to develop new stories and features.
- Handle original digital features and additional original content assigned for digital distribution.
- Support search, story highlighting, aggregation, budgeting, homepage assembly, and other daily digital workflow tasks.
- Coordinate with Senior Assistant Editors and the social team regarding story availability for homepage placement and social promotion.
- Take on other assignments as directed by managers.
What we're looking for
The ideal candidate has newsroom experience, strong news judgment, and a genuine interest in sports business, media, and entertainment. This person should be highly organized, detail-focused, and able to handle heavy information flow while meeting tight deadlines. The role also requires the ability to work independently, collaborate well with others, and communicate comfortably with people in person, by phone, and online.
Working conditions
This is a general office role with extensive computer use. The job may require flexible scheduling, including nights, weekends, and holidays, depending on editorial needs.
