Role Overview

We are seeking early-career software engineers eager to contribute meaningfully to core user experiences that help users derive significant value from Notion. Engineers will own projects, make key technical decisions, and collaborate across disciplines including design, product, and data to innovate how work is done worldwide.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and deliver product features end-to-end—from initial concepts to launch, followed by iteration based on user feedback and analytics.
• Enhance performance, reliability, and quality of major components that serve millions of users across thousands of organizations.
• Conduct experiments aimed at improving user activation, retention, collaboration, and revenue in partnership with design, data science, and research teams.
• Build and improve internal tools and infrastructure to accelerate engineering efficiency and safety.
• Contribute to the team culture by upholding high standards for code quality, learning, and making deliberate technical tradeoffs.

Potential Focus Areas

• Core product features such as the editor, databases, and sharing functionalities integral to millions of user workflows.
• AI and automation features that amplify power, context-awareness, and user efficiency.
• Growth initiatives enhancing onboarding experiences, increasing user engagement and helping new users realize Notion’s value.
• Platform and backend infrastructure ensuring scalable, reliable, and high-performance services.

Required Qualifications

• Less than two years of software engineering experience with strong fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, and distributed systems.
• A pragmatic, customer-focused problem-solving mindset, capable of understanding complex contexts and delivering balanced, impactful solutions under ambiguity.
• An impact-oriented approach to technology, emphasizing effective tools for user and business value over trends or specific technologies; familiarity with AI-assisted development environments like Cursor and Claude Code is a plus.
• Strong proactive communication and ownership, demonstrating initiative, clear status updates, and seeking solutions independently while appropriately collaborating.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with React, TypeScript, Node.js, Postgres, or Elasticsearch technologies.
• Interest in the intersection of technology and society and an awareness of the ethical responsibilities of technologists.
• Familiarity with pioneering computing thinkers such as Ada Lovelace, Douglas Engelbart, and Alan Kay.

Compensation and Culture

Competitive salary, equity, and benefits package will be provided, with expected salary for San Francisco-based roles ranging approximately from $130,000 to $150,000 annually, depending on experience.
