Job description
Overview
The Skilled Labourer - Airport plays a critical role in maintaining airport infrastructure including runways, aprons, taxiways, grounds, buildings, lighting, and equipment to ensure safety and compliance with Canadian and international aviation regulations. This role involves the inspection and upkeep of airfield structures, operation and minor maintenance of a range of heavy and light equipment, and the management of wildlife risks to aircraft safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct routine inspections and maintenance of airport asphalt surfaces using appropriate equipment and materials such as anti-icing/de-icing chemicals, asphalt, and concrete.
- Evaluate and maintain runways, taxiways, aprons, lighting, drainage, and signage systems, including testing runway braking conditions and detecting foreign object debris.
- Perform landscaping and groundskeeping to enhance airport appearance and reduce wildlife hazards.
- Monitor operating conditions of heavy and light vehicles, carrying out minor repairs or coordinating with mechanics as needed.
- Implement bird and wildlife control techniques including scaring methods and management of natural vegetation.
- Install and maintain airport perimeter fences and gates to secure the premises.
- Participate in airport safety, security, environmental management, and emergency response programs.
- Operate heavy machinery for earthworks and landscaping projects.
- Prepare electronic reports on runway conditions, especially during winter, for public dissemination.
Qualifications and Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of 3 years experience in airport maintenance or operating heavy equipment for snow removal (including plow trucks, loaders, tractors, sweepers).
- Valid DZ Driver's License with a clean driving record is mandatory.
- Willingness to acquire Airport Vehicle Operating Permit, Aeronautical Radio License, Wildlife Control Course, Runway Surface Condition Reporting, and Runway Friction Index certifications.
- Additional certifications such as Chainsaw Operation, Firearms Acquisition, and Fall Protection are advantageous.
- Capability to safely operate complex equipment in close proximity to aircraft while maintaining high situational awareness from multiple communication sources.
- Strong adherence to safety protocols, aviation standards, and regulatory compliance.
- Ability to work flexible hours including rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Must be physically capable of essential duties such as snow shoveling.
- Must pass criminal background checks and internal assessments, including written and practical driving tests.

Additional Information
The position requires participation in pre-trip training and inspections with successful completion within 30 working days of starting. The role demands high reliability in safety management systems to minimize aviation and workplace risks. Candidates must demonstrate competency under the Occupational Health & Safety Act.
Compensation and Benefits
The hourly salary ranges between $28.57 and $34.97. Work Environment
