Job description

Job Overview

This role involves diagnosing and repairing variable frequency drives (VFDs) by pinpointing faults at the component level, performing repairs, and conducting load tests prior to dispatch. It primarily focuses on hands-on work at the workshop bench with occasional customer site visits.

Key Responsibilities

  • Receive and assess failed VFD units, documenting fault histories from customers.
  • Perform systematic troubleshooting of components including input rectifiers, DC bus, IGBT modules, gate driver circuits, SMPS/control supplies, current sensors, and control cards.
  • Use diagnostic tools such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, LCR meters, and ESR meters to identify component-level faults.
  • Replace faulty parts like IGBT modules, thyristor/diode bridges, DC link capacitors, driver ICs, current transducers, cooling fans, and relays, ensuring quality soldering and desoldering on multi-layer circuit boards.
  • Conduct load tests on repaired drives using load banks or test motors, verifying waveform balance, thermal performance, and trip response before clearance for dispatch.
  • Maintain detailed repair records including identified faults, root causes, parts replaced, and test outcomes.
  • Detect recurring failure patterns and advise customers on root causes such as supply issues, overloads, ambient conditions, cable problems, or cooling deficiencies.
  • Support drive commissioning, parameter adjustments, and breakdown troubleshooting at customer sites as needed.
  • Ensure workshop cleanliness, compliance with electrostatic discharge (ESD) protocols, and management of spares inventory.

Candidate Profile & Requirements

  • Experience in hands-on component-level repair of VFDs or closely related power electronics equipment such as online UPS, servo stabilizers, welding inverters, solar inverters, DC drives, or SMPS.
  • Ability to interpret and utilize power and control circuit diagrams effectively.
  • Proficient use of multimeters and oscilloscopes, including diode testing of IGBTs and rectifiers.
  • Skilled in soldering and desoldering both SMD and through-hole components on circuit boards.
  • Understanding of three-phase power systems, PWM inverter principles, and common drive protection mechanisms such as overcurrent, overvoltage, undervoltage, overload, earth fault, and phase loss protections.
  • Strong adherence to electrical safety practices including proper DC bus discharge, ESD handling, and lockout-tagout (LOTO) procedures.
