Role Overview
Based at the Electrical Division Edmonton location, the Payroll Specialist will report to the Payroll Director. They will be responsible for managing biweekly and semi-monthly payroll cycles, maintaining payroll systems aligned with HR and Benefits platforms, and supporting the Finance department.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute end-to-end payroll processing for both biweekly and semi-monthly cycles.
- Manage Records of Employment (ROEs) and special employee payments following company protocols.
- Handle non-standard payroll activities such as employee transfers, terminations, and complex adjustments.
- Update and maintain employee information within the Time and Attendance system.
- Investigate and resolve payroll-related inquiries while ensuring high-quality customer service.
- Perform reconciliation of payroll taxes post-payroll and address discrepancies.
- Participate in, or lead, the development, testing, and implementation of new payroll processes or systems, including integration of new company locations.
- Contribute to drafting and updating Payroll Department policies and procedures as needed.
- Support and occasionally lead quarter-end and year-end payroll activities.
- Serve as a resource by resolving complex issues, providing training on payroll systems, and overseeing tasks delegated to junior staff.
- Engage regularly with internal departments such as HR, Benefits, and Finance, and maintain external contacts including banks, vendors, and government agencies.
Qualifications
- Associate degree from an accredited institution is required.
- Certified Payroll Professional designation is preferred.
- At least 2 years of full-cycle payroll administration experience.
- Minimum 2 years experience managing payroll taxes.
- Prior exposure to Dayforce payroll system is an advantage.

- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite — Outlook, Excel, and Word.
- Understanding of Human Resources functions and processes.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

Work Environment & Physical Demands
The majority of work occurs in a standard office setting, with occasional exposure to shop environments, construction sites, active client locations, and test labs. Employees must comply with Powell's strict safety policies, utilize provided protective equipment, and adhere to accident prevention programs. Physical requirements include frequent use of hands, standing, sitting, talking, and hearing, along with visual acuity for close work and focus adjustments.
