Marshal (Overnight Shift)

Overview

The City of Sugar Hill is seeking a full-time Marshal for the overnight shift (7PM-7AM) following a 2/2/3 schedule. Reporting directly to the Chief Marshal, this role is vital in upholding law and order, ensuring public safety, and adhering to all relevant policies and legal standards at the local, state, and federal levels.

Key Responsibilities

• Engage with community members to foster positive relations and provide assistance as needed.
• Report to supervisory staff on incidents, detailing the nature of calls and observations at scenes and maintaining order during public events.
• Administer CPR and first aid when required and respond to public inquiries.
• Direct traffic and aid motorists, clear roadway debris, and assist at community functions as necessary.
• Inspect assigned department vehicles for safety compliance and report issues promptly.
• Perform physically demanding tasks such as extended foot patrols, sprinting, running during pursuits, stair navigation, lifting, carrying, and applying physical force for enforcement and protection when necessary.
• Conduct patrols of specified districts including city parks and business areas, monitoring for criminal activity and responding to public service calls.
• Document complaints about illegal activities, initiate preliminary investigations, and prepare detailed reports for supervisors.
• Train new officers on department procedures and law enforcement techniques.
• Maintain public relations through regular interaction with the community, business owners, and visitors in downtown and commercial areas.
• Monitor and manage crowd behavior and conduct investigations as required.
• Enforce parking regulations, improve traffic flow, issue citations, arrest impaired or unsafe drivers, and report issues with traffic control infrastructure.
• Provide law enforcement at City Hall and maintain courtroom security during Municipal Court sessions.
• Collaborate closely with other law enforcement agencies and work holidays as scheduled.

Qualifications and Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Preferred minimum of five years’ experience as a Law Enforcement Officer.
• Mandatory Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic Law Enforcement Certification.
• Valid Georgia Class C Driver’s License with an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record.
• Thorough knowledge of relevant laws, investigation methods, departmental rules, and first aid/CPR skills.
• Strong analytical and decision-making abilities to handle situations objectively and quickly.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including tact, firmness, courtesy, and respect for individual rights.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Proficiency in firearms use and understanding of enforcement policies.
