About the Role

The Department of Housing and Communities seeks a Maintenance Worker East to join on a full-time temporary basis, starting immediately through August 2027, with potential extension. Located in Montague, Prince Edward Island, this role supports maintenance and inspection of housing properties to preserve and enhance their condition, ensuring a quality living environment for tenants. Key Duties

  • Repair or replace exterior components like eavestroughs, siding, shingles, mailboxes, and building signs.
  • Inspect and fix appliances, clotheslines, and equipment or replace as needed.
  • Install, repair, and remove locks for rekeying purposes.
  • Perform drywall repairs including taping, finishing, and painting.
  • Install and repair doors, windows, screens, and related hardware.
  • Fix or replace cabinets, countertops, and associated hardware.
  • Construct or repair decks, ramps, garbage and oil tank enclosures.
  • Build or maintain outdoor structures like sheds, steps, and sidewalks.
  • Replace flooring and install baseboards as needed.
  • Respond promptly to emergency maintenance issues (e.g., power outages, heating failures, water overflows).
  • Maintain heating systems including boilers, pumps, valves, and water feeders.
  • Carry out plumbing repairs or replacements (tubs, sinks, toilets, faucets, shut off valves).
  • Execute basic electrical maintenance tasks such as changing bulbs, plugs, switches, and fixtures.
  • Repair or replace exhaust fan motors when possible.
  • Maintain and assess computerized heating systems such as heat pumps, geothermal, biomass, and duct heaters.
  • Participate in periodic on-call duties for urgent after-hours maintenance.
  • Investigate maintenance issues and propose appropriate solutions.
  • Manage purchasing of supplies and tools using a Purchasing Card.
  • Build and sustain positive relationships with tenants, Housing Officers, and staff to assist with tenant concerns.
  • Keep accurate records related to maintenance and property management systems.
  • Support supervisors and other trades as needed.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 is mandatory.
  • Completion of coursework or training in trade disciplines is preferred.
  • Certification in trades qualification from PEI Government and Red Seal endorsement is advantageous; equivalencies considered.
  • Extensive experience in building and grounds maintenance, including plumbing, carpentry, electrical work, and small engine repairs.
  • Experience in managing maintenance in multi-building complexes.
  • Experience leading or guiding work considered an asset.
  • Skills in cost estimating and specification writing regarded as beneficial.
  • Good knowledge of building codes.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with clients and contractors.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Possession of a valid PEI driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Basic computer skills (word processing, email, spreadsheets).
  • Physically and medically fit to fulfill job duties.
  • Good attendance, work record, and acceptable Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector checks.

Additional Requirements

  • May need to provide own vehicle for work purposes.
  • Training or certification in WHMIS, CPR, and First Aid.
  • Mental Health First Aid certification is an asset.
