Job description

Position Summary

The Maintenance Attendant supports daily facilities upkeep at Koidu Government Hospital and the Maternal Center of Excellence in Sierra Leone. Under the guidance of the Head of Maintenance, this role ensures efficient operation of hospital infrastructure by assisting with electrical, plumbing, HVAC, generator, and general repair tasks. The attendant facilitates maintenance technicians’ work by managing tools, materials, and providing physical assistance to complete activities safely.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with electrical tasks such as cable pulling, conduit installation, and light fixture replacements.
  • Support generator upkeep including oil change, filter replacement, fuel level monitoring, and cleaning generator areas.
  • Help HVAC technicians service split units, VRF systems, and cassette units by cleaning filters, aiding duct installation, and clearing drain lines.
  • Engage in plumbing works including pipe fitting, leak fixing, water tank cleaning, and checking septic systems.
  • Perform equipment cleaning, organize workspaces, and identify potential safety hazards.
  • Repair and maintain doors, locks, hinges, handles, cabinets, drawers, and windows.
  • Provide manual support for installing and removing mechanical fixtures and building hardware.
  • Load and unload materials and transport equipment and supplies within hospital premises.
  • Maintain cleanliness in technical areas such as generator rooms, workshops, and utility spaces.
  • Conduct routine facility inspections and report faults to supervisors.
  • Collaborate with hospital maintenance, operations, and biomedical teams on infrastructure projects.
  • Coordinate with external contractors or technicians as needed.
  • Observe occupational safety protocols and use personal protective equipment consistently.

Additional Duties

  • Perform other assigned tasks within the scope of maintenance duties as directed by the line manager.
  • Adapt to evolving role responsibilities as reviewed periodically with the supervisor.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum academic qualification: WASSCE or Diploma preferred.
  • One to two years of experience in maintenance assistant roles, preferably in construction or hospitality sectors.
  • Skills in welding, masonry, tiling, plumbing, carpentry, or painting are advantageous.
  • Hospital maintenance experience is a plus.
  • Able to operate hand and power tools and follow technical instructions accurately.
  • Physically fit with stamina, reliable, and willing to engage in manual labor.
  • Quick to learn, proactive, with a good work ethic and a team-oriented mindset.
  • Basic understanding of workplace safety and tool handling.
