Job Summary

The Transportation Manager is responsible for coordinating logistics across the enterprise, managing specimen and supply movement through data-driven insights. This role leads the creation and maintenance of reporting systems, identifies shipment inefficiencies, and collaborates cross-functionally to optimize performance, service quality, and costs, directly improving company operations and financial outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze and optimize the physical flow from kit preparation to lab results, minimizing handling and standardizing packaging.
  • Develop work instructions compliant with regulations and industry best practices for packaging and labeling.
  • Advise internal and external stakeholders on optimal logistics processes.
  • Design and refine KPIs to encourage continuous enhancement of operations.
  • Monitor shipment data, tracking costs, accessorial fees, adherence to shipping protocols, volume trends, and delivery timeliness.
  • Oversee freight invoice validation and timely resolution of discrepancies against contracts and shipment records.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and logistics partners to resolve issues, improve billing accuracy, efficiency, and cost controls.
  • Report transportation metrics and suggest improvements to senior leadership.
  • Lead projects aimed at improving on-time delivery, specimen readiness, integrity, and cost management.
  • Define and manage the logistics operating framework involving third-party logistics, couriers, and service coverage models, along with carrier contract strategy and performance standards.
  • Maintain and negotiate carrier relationships and service agreements, ensuring aligned objectives for cost, service, and operational output.
  • Act as the main liaison for resolving carrier-related concerns domestically and internationally.
  • Establish and lead a cross-departmental specimen logistics council including operations, accessioning, client services, compliance, and IT.
  • Work with Quality Assurance to establish and audit compliance protocols related to chain-of-custody, controlled substances, and biohazard handling.
  • Manage incident responses for temperature deviations, lost or compromised specimens, and mislabeling.
  • Stay current with industry regulations and adapt logistics models accordingly.
  • Identify risks in transport processes and develop mitigation and contingency plans.
  • Serve as a change advocate within Procurement for added value delivery.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, or related disciplines.
  • 5 to 7 years of experience in transportation planning or logistics, including carrier contracting and Service Level Agreements.
  • Expertise in transportation and distribution operations.
  • Strong background in process design, particularly Lean and continuous improvement methodologies.

Preferred Experience

  • Prior experience in healthcare or laboratory logistics.
