NEXTDC is a prominent ASX 100 technology firm, pioneering Australia's and Asia's future in high-tech infrastructure. With 17 data centers in 7 major Australian cities and multiple international sites underway, we design, construct, and manage advanced, eco-friendly data center solutions that meet diverse local and global customer demands. Our collaborative culture thrives on continuous learning, innovation, and dedication to delivering customer-focused data center services.
Role Overview
We are expanding our hyperscale and AI-ready data center capacity essential for Australia's leading cloud and AI clients. The Hyperscale Electrical Engineering Director will lead the electrical infrastructure's technical success across the entire data center lifecycle, ensuring high safety, resilience, and precise engineering. Reporting to the Head of Hyperscale Engineering, this role involves hands-on leadership in electrical design, operations, and grid management, rather than purely administrative duties.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the Electrical Systems Technical Representative, offering subject matter expertise throughout design, construction, commissioning, and operations phases.
- Lead and manage concept, schematic, and detailed electrical design developments, conduct independent design reviews, and assess vendor submissions against NEXTDC standards.
- Perform electrical studies including load flow, short circuit, discrimination, earthing, and failover analyses.
- Deliver feasibility studies, due diligence, engineering briefs, capital estimates, total cost of ownership, and ROI evaluations.
- Identify and mitigate engineering risks related to grid interface, redundancy, scalability, and operational resilience.
- Provide on-site support during construction, commission levels 1 to 5, integrated systems testing, and ongoing operational engineering advice including facility management and outage planning.
Qualifications and Experience
- Proven extensive experience in hyperscale or mission-critical data center electrical engineering, delivering complex projects from concept to operation.
- Strong leadership and engineering assurance skills in continuous 24/7 operational environments.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management capabilities at senior organizational levels.
- Comprehensive knowledge of industry standards, codes, and best practices combined with strong analytical and risk management skills.
- High Voltage accreditation and Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) or Registered Professional Engineer Queensland (RPEQ) certifications are advantageous.
Additional Information
- Opportunity to join one of Australia's fastest-growing enterprises, contributing significantly to AI and digital economy development.
- Inclusive, diverse, and values-led culture supporting hybrid work arrangements.
- Employee benefits include gifted share options, dedicated company days off, volunteer programs, professional development, and comprehensive wellbeing and mental health initiatives.
- Excellent career growth prospects as the company expands.
