Role Overview
The Environmental and Sustainability Advisor will support the Environmental and Sustainability Manager and the ESG team in advancing the company’s sustainability management, compliance, and goals. Serving as an ESG advocate within the organization, the position is based at Head Office with regular travel to active project sites.
Main Responsibilities
- Provide expert guidance and support to Health Safety and Environmental teams, site management, ESG champions, and other departments concerning environmental management and ESG matters.
- Assist site teams in establishing Environmental Management Systems and ESG plans for their projects, offering continuous support throughout building phases.
- Conduct site visits to assess environmental and ESG performance, verifying plans, documentation, records, data, and practical effectiveness.
- Participate in HSE audits and aid teams in resolving environmental and ESG non-conformities.
- Develop environmental and ESG plans during pre-construction and tender stages.
- Support external audits related to ISO 14001, carbon verification, and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) by preparing the Environmental Management System and ESG reporting.
- Lead investigations for significant unplanned environmental incidents on sites.
- Provide continuous assistance for ESG data reporting via software platforms, monitoring site-collected data, identifying gaps, and guiding corrective actions.
- Support sustainability certification programs such as HPI, LEED, BREEAM, EU Taxonomy, Life Cycle Assessments, and other client requirements.
- Design and deliver environmental and ESG training, communications, and awareness materials including presentations, briefings, toolbox talks, Q&A sessions, lessons learnt, social media content, posters, and guidance notes.
- Manage and implement assigned sustainability initiatives like waste recycling, carbon reduction, biodiversity, and community engagement targets.
- Collaborate with site personnel, business units, consultants, and professional organizations to advance corporate sustainability objectives and sector-wide progress.
- Prepare award submissions related to environmental and sustainability performance.
- Gather and analyze environmental and ESG key performance indicators (KPIs) for senior management, ESG committees, and board meetings.
- Assist in creating the corporate annual sustainability report and aid in CSRD preparation.
- Support the company’s ESG Committee by facilitating meetings, offering solutions to sustainability challenges, and driving innovation.
- Engage with suppliers and vendors to monitor and improve environmental and sustainability standards across the supply chain.
- Track and interpret emerging sustainability and environmental legislation, policies, industry practices, and trends; evaluate related risks and recommend solutions, ensuring oversight on Article 27 and 28 compliance, Life Cycle Assessments, and construction industry programs.
- Represent the company on relevant industry committees and liaise with membership bodies focused on environmental matters.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
- At least 1 to 3 years’ experience in environmental or sustainability management or a closely related role.
- A bachelor's degree or equivalent tertiary qualification in environmental science, sustainability, construction, or a related discipline.
- Familiarity with implementing and auditing Environmental Management Systems according to ISO 14001 standards.
- Competency in ESG aspects including biodiversity, ecology, protection measures for SPA, SAC, and natural habitats, water and waste management, circular economy principles, carbon and greenhouse gas management, and social governance topics like equality, diversity, and inclusion.
- Knowledge of construction-related environmental regulations such as waste management, circular economy regulations including Articles 27 and 28.
- Experience with industry best practices and certification schemes like Life Cycle Assessments (LCA), LEED, BREEAM, Home Performance Index (HPI), and EU Taxonomy.
- Capability to interpret and formulate tailored environmental management plans for construction projects.
- Awareness of Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive requirements and reporting processes.
- Proven self-starter qualities with the ability to independently manage multiple priorities and projects.
- Dedicated passion for ESG and the ability to serve confidently as an ESG champion, collaborating effectively across organizational levels and supply chains.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, proficient presentation abilities, and competent with information technology.
