About the Role and Company
Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited, part of the Kruger Publication Papers division, is a leading manufacturer of newsprint with strong commitments to sustainability and energy self-sufficiency. The company holds the Sustainable Forest Initiative Certification and is powered by clean energy sources including Deer Lake Power Generation, Steam Power, and Steam Recovery systems.
The Improvement Engineer role is designed as an entry-level opportunity for recent engineering graduates. Hired candidates will engage in projects aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and sustainability across multiple areas of the business. This position is based primarily within the Technical Services and Engineering Department but involves collaboration with Maintenance and Production teams. It serves as a foundation for career growth into other mill-related roles such as operations leadership, reliability, planning, and maintenance.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify and quantify value in solving operational problems to improve budget adherence.
- Apply lean manufacturing principles to develop and implement action plans that close operational gaps.
- Develop metrics and analyze process parameters to support continuous improvement.
- Lead or support improvement initiatives including Kaizens, brainstorming sessions, and troubleshooting.
- Collaborate with various departments to implement continuous improvement actions and verify the sustainability of gains.
- Assist or take the lead in the design and execution of capital and other projects when required.
- Thoroughly document trials to maximize eligibility for scientific research and experimental development tax credits.
- Conduct data analysis and reporting as necessary to support decision-making.
- Pursue ongoing personal and professional development toward professional engineering certification.

- Upgrading plans for critical communication and control systems.
- Design and installation of compressed air systems.
- Implementation of energy reduction initiatives to decrease electrical and boiler fuel consumption.
- Application of management of change protocols within project execution.
- Modifications to piping and designs of thermal mechanical pulping water systems.
- Optimization of pumps to minimize equipment damage and improve energy efficiency.
- Enhancement of paper machine chemical retention aid application, from delivery through production.
- Design and installation of PLC control systems for Paper Machine 2 and Thermal Mechanical Pulping processes.
- Review, update, and implement safety systems.
Qualifications and Skills
- Graduation from a recognized engineering program between May 2023 and May 2025, with preference for electrical and mechanical engineering disciplines though others are welcome.
- Enthusiasm for continuous improvement and innovative problem-solving.
- Interest in working for a major manufacturer in Newfoundland and Labrador, with growth prospects across Canada.
- Willingness to acquire training and knowledge in specialized areas such as Lean Six Sigma and Root Cause Analysis.
- Proficiency with Excel and familiarity with additional data management software like PI or Envoy.
