Role Purpose

The Database Administrator Specialist will carry out database administration responsibilities with full administrator access, manage release and version controls, and support both production and development environments primarily involving DB2 on z/OS, MVS, and CICS platforms. This role includes generating reports, advising on performance enhancements, assisting developers on SQL coding, and escalating risks or database downtime issues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage authorization of TSO user IDs and assignment of privileges for specific production database tables.
  • Oversee production reporting to ensure timely execution and optimize report throughput on the BAS system.
  • Provide end-user support within the MVS environment.
  • Collaborate effectively within the team to align with shared objectives.
  • Identify potential issues early and notify supervisors to mitigate risks.
  • Offer suggestions for DB2 performance improvements and tuning.
  • Handle release management activities.
  • Conduct database quality assurance and review all SQL code destined for production releases.
  • Perform periodic standby duties to respond to DB2, CICS, and VSAM issues impacting production and maintenance teams.
  • Analyze and configure extent setups for DB2 tables and VSAM files in production, maintaining continuous monitoring and corrections.
  • Propose optimizations for online transactions.
  • Continually refine support and operational procedures within the platform.
  • Create and configure new DB2, CICS, and VSAM objects for new departmental implementations.
  • Monitor VSAM splits and schedule reorganizations of VSAM and databases as needed.
  • Manage database refreshes from production to non-production environments.
  • Develop and alter database tables, tablespaces, and indexes in coordination with senior DBAs.
  • Conduct version control and release management tasks as necessary.
  • Review procedural documentation prepared by team members.
  • Supervise small DBA teams when required, provide weekly status reports, assist team members in DBA and release management activities, and participate in client meetings and workshops.

Required Skills and Knowledge

  • At least 3 years as a DB2 DBA or senior operator within a z/OS environment.
  • Proficient with Mainframe (MVS), DB2 for z/OS, Windows operating systems, SQL, CICS, REXX scripting, and JCL.
  • Familiarity with batch operations and MVS architecture.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with DB2 version 12 or higher on z/OS.
  • Knowledge of database management tools such as performance monitors and schedulers like CONTROL-M/R/O/T.
  • Use of tools including DB2 Query Monitor, SQL Performance Analyzer, OPTIM Query Workload Tuner, DB2 Administrator Tool, DB2 Log Analysis Tool, QMF for Workstation and z/OS, CICS DBUG Tool, TMON, DB2 Data Studio, DB2 Omegamon, DB2 IDZ and IDAA.
  • Ability to automate routing tasks using SQL and/or REXX scripting.
  • Oracle database experience is advantageous.

Educational and Experience Requirements

A technical diploma in a relevant discipline is required. The candidate should have expert proficiency in database management, optimization, and tuning accompanied by a minimum of two years in relevant associated skillsets.
